DEEPAK PAYING $9M FOR 2 PADS W/GREAT CPW VUS

February 7, 2002 -- SPIRITUAL sage to the stars Deepak Chopra is getting closer to the heavens.
As evidence, the self-improvement mogul is purchasing two apartments on high floors in two different buildings, both of which will have stunning views of the cityscape and beyond once construction on the buildings is completed.

The first of his two acquisitions is a 69th-floor apartment at the Park Imperial (http://www.wirednewyork.com/random_house.htm) at 230 W. 56th St. listed in the mid-$2 million range. The second is a larger sky-high pad with three bedrooms on a floor in the 60s in the nearby AOL Time Warner Building (http://www.wirednewyork.com/aol_timer_warner_center.htm) on Columbus Circle, for which he's paying approximately $6.5 million.

"What he's doing is buying at The Park Imperial (http://www.wirednewyork.com/random_house.htm), because those apartments will be ready in about 10 months," said a broker familiar with the purchase. "AOL Time Warner, conversely, won't be finished for another 20 to 24 months."

As advisor to a galaxy of celebrities he refers to as "My Friends" - who include Hugh Hefner, Donna Karan, Demi Moore, Michael Jackson, Madonna and the late George Harrison - he has amassed millions of followers. Critics have suggested that Chopra seems more profit than prophet, however, having sold millions of books and chairing a New Age conglomerate.

One of Chopra's new neighbors at the AOL Time Warner complex (http://www.wirednewyork.com/aol_timer_warner_center.htm) will be man-about-town novelist Stanley Pottinger, who is writing a non-fictional check for more than $9 million for his two condominium apartments.

Pottinger, 62, a former official in the Nixon administration, lawyer and investment banker, was perhaps better known for his arm candy, as the long-time boyfriend of feminist icon Gloria Steinem and, later, paramour to perky Kathie Lee Johnson - before she became the latest Mrs. Frank Gifford.

"She [Kathie Lee] wanted to get married and have children," he would later say. "I had already done that."

Hard to imagine he took and passed on fathering a possible Cody and Cassidy.

His novels include medical thriller "The Fourth Procedure" and "A Slow Burning."

Sources say Pottinger's purchases in AOL TW, also known as One Central Park, are on a floor in the mid-60s of the 80-story tower.

A spokesperson for the building said no contract has been signed for the two apartments.
