Its funny, the perspective on that photo makes it look like GM Building will still be taller than Bloomberg. Of course we know that this is not true but i want it to look massive when completed.

ZippyTheChimp

I'm just guessing, but the orange netting at the top of the north side may be the setback (on the rendering), which would mean five more floors and the crown.

I think it already looks good from the park.

emmeka

Yeh, but it still loks a bit stubby from that angle.

I think this scraper is really a nice addition to NYC skiline. The proportions are fine, the curtain-wall is very elegant and the color is really beautiful. Even the mass is well detailed with interesting setbacks. It won't add nothing to history of architecture of course, but it is a good building, maybe better in the reality than in the sketches and with a much greater elegance than many of Childs' buildings...

The occupied floors of the Bloomberg Tower have topped off. Now on to the 60 foot crown, and the completion of one helluva tower. It should be interesting to see how the crown is constructed. I dont think it's possible for the 60 foot crown to be a single concrete cube, so we'll see...

i went by the building today and it looks like they are adding the crown section immediately. Right now it looks like a concrete slab beginning above the last floor.

Stern
January 9th, 2004, 04:34 PM
Yup! It looks as if the crown will be constructed by conventional methods.

http://galleries.soaringtowers.org/albums/Stern/1073207222752782_G.jpg

There will be seven more purely ornamental floors before topping out.

Gulcrapek
January 9th, 2004, 04:43 PM
Seven?

JACKinNYC
January 9th, 2004, 06:02 PM
Yeah, seven?

yanni111
January 9th, 2004, 07:35 PM
yes seven according to the renderings. They look like 7 seperate "floors" but their heights are lower than the real floors just below. From the renderings these 7 fakes will equal 5 of the real. So to imagine the final height just add another 5 real floors on top of what is now.

emmeka
January 10th, 2004, 12:54 PM
I think that its patternwork with the glass on the rendering that continues the horizontal fashion of the floors. And by the way it wont be a solid concrete block, thats just stupid. the concrete will be for the floor of the mechanical area that will be housed in the crown. The crown will most probably be glass like morgan stanley just north of times square.

the view of Bloomberg from Park Avenue in the 60s is awesome! It rises way above the residential stuff on Park Ave which makes it look extremely tall. Also at some points in the 60s on park you can see both Citicorp and Bloomberg with Bloomberg closer making it look taller than Citicorp! and its not even finished reaching its final height yet! theyve been busy working all week, its interesting to see the way they are making the crown now. The little guys walking around at the top look so tiny!

ZippyTheChimp
May 8th, 2004, 12:10 AM
I don't know, but in observing both Citi and Bloomberg from Queens or Roosevelt Island, it's obvious that Citi is more than 60 ft taller. Even from the northern end of Roosevelt, Bloomberg though closer, appears shorter.

AJphx
May 8th, 2004, 01:17 AM
A group of Skyscrapers.com editors went to New York a week or two ago and got height information for all the newest towers. They say they looked at blueprints from the architects and construction offices. Over at SSP, the forumer Vito Corleone (I'm not sure which emporis guy he is though) posted a thread with all the update info.

So apparently Bloomberg is actually 806 feet. You will have to go over to the SSP thread for specifics, but the old height figure had been measured from somewhere other than ground level for some reason.

It's still the seventh-tallest building in Midtown, third-tallest on Lexington Avenue, and the second-tallest mixed-use building in the City. We're all a little disappointed, but this is still a great building and we should be proud to have it.

I'm not disappointed. The building looks the same to me, regardless of the height number. Thinking that 856 was correct, I was just puzzled by the difference with Citigroup.

It's a nice addition to the skyline.

on sunday i saw that they are now removing alot of the blue protective film that they have had on those metal bars that surrounds the outside of each floors and its a very clean white color, it looks great!! So far theyve only done it on the top floors of the east side wall. This will really make each floor stand out and increase the verticality of the building rather than it looking like one same color glass wall from bottom to top. Blue glass with white stripes looks great!!!

Although it's a very high end building, it's still not in the classiest location. There are many dilapidated white brick buildings surrounding it on all sides on Lex and Third Avenues. Nevertheless, if one goes one block to the west onto Park, it's really, really beautiful and upscale.

Citi has major operations all over the city, really. They have major offices in midtown (Citi tower, Park Ave, now Bloomie), they have their own building (formerly Travelers) down on the west side highway for Salomon Smith Barney among others, they have their own tower in LIC Queens for their Credit Card Unit and are going to put up another 15 story building next door.

Curious: what is in that top part of the building above the top floor? Is that just for decoration?

That's a mechanical penthouse. I'm guessing that it also holds the water tower.

The scaffolding has started to come down. It no longer reaches the top 5-6 floors.

I gotta say that this is one of the nicer developments I have seen. Does it have some sort of ground level retail? And how is the building doing renting out space wise?

Well it might be a very expensive 'mechanical penthouse' I am sure. :-)

It appears there are at least 2 antennae atop the new Bloomberg Tower. Does anybody know about these?

I wouldn't say that it has two antennas, but I'm not really sure either!

From nypost.com today:

They're breathing a sigh of relief at Bloomberg LP today — a judge just ruled that the media company founded by Mike Bloomberg doesn't have to vacate its offices at 110 E. 59th St. until it's ready to move to its new home at 731 Lexington Ave.

Had the ruling gone the other way, it would have put Bloomberg — main office tenant at the Vornado tower on the old Alexander's site — in a pickle.

If you never heard about this dispute, it's because both Bloomberg and landlord Tenber Associates, a partnership that includes the family of Burton and Scott Resnick, kept the awkward case under wraps.

Bloomberg has long had about 360,000 square feet at 110 E. 59th and at 499 Park Ave. next door — about half at each address, with some of the space linked by telecommuncations lines for TV broadcasts on upper floors.

Bloomberg's lease at 110 E. 59th was up last September. Bloomberg and Tenber agreed that Bloomberg could stay until December, when Bloomberg would vacate half the space to make room for new tenants Cantor Fitzgerald and an Estee Lauder division.

But while Bloomberg believed it had Tenber's consent to continue using the rest of its space until June, when its lease at 499 Park expired, Tenber denied agreeing to that, and demanded that Bloomberg pay double rent until it moved.

Robert Finkelstein, a partner at law firm Finkelstein Newman, which represented Bloomberg, relates: "In September, when the lease is up, Tenber says, 'get out.'

"Bloomberg says, wait, we're doing a massive relocation we've been working on for years. The schedule gets us out half in December and June for the rest."

Tenber took Bloomberg to court in October demanding eviction.

But the court ruled yesterday that Bloomberg can stay because the landlord, in verbal discussions and in other ways, actually "induced" Bloomberg to remain beyond the lease expiration — and that its motive in asking for double rent was to make up for the cost of paying the new tenants' "bridge" rents at their old addresses after their leases expired there.

The landlord "got what it bargained for," the court said.

Calls to Scott Resnick and to the lawyer for Tenber, Michael Simon, were not returned.
