Elaborate?
Time Warner is peaceful and serene and contextual. It's better proportioned, less exhibitionistic, and a team player, collaborating with 2CC to make a defined and comprehensible place --lately and sympathetically reinforced by the treatment of the central circle itself. It gives the public access to its interior and integrates complex functions like a glass-walled concert hall. Like Catherine Deneuve, it might be deep or shallow, but it has beautiful skin.

the Century, the Majestic, the San Remo, and the El Dorado, all built (like the Empire State Building) in 1930 and 1931.

imagine being us, back then.

Central Park, which few residents will know was once a dangerous dustbowl, until Mayor Giuliani cleared up its crime

Well that's just silly hyperbole, and another perfect example of the media endlessly toting the meme about imbecile Giuliani.

it looks instead as though it is transmitting its tremendous force not heavenward but downward into the earth, with such brute and resentful force that in time the ground will crack from river to river, and who knows what slimy alien creatures will slither out of the fissures.

:D That was some good weed, wasn't it Myron?:)

I do agree about the magnificent way Time Warner frames the Western sky when one is standing on Central Park South looking West. And ablarc, you're quite right in describing TWC as serene. I get that feeling looking up at it from across the street, especially on a day when they are melting with the sky and clouds so beautifully.

It's great to see the trees filling in. Just compare the above to this Wikipedia photo, dated August 7th, 2005:

If you look closely (http://www.panoramio.com/photos/original/10763.jpg): you can almost see a teardrop forming in the eye of C. Colombus as he gazes upon that building. :(

P.S. Great (as always) photos KZ. Thanks for posting - much appreciated.

How atrocious is this backdrop going to look one the scandalous all glass recladding is done for the building behind it. Contrast gone. I am going to be aghast at the sight of this once that farce is completed.

What bulls--t.

the only consolation is that -- as far as i can tell -- the brick will be left for the most part and the glass put up over it.

that way, once moinian kicks the bucket during a routine collagen-injection operation, the newsweek/GM building can be restored to its current glory after we've all emptied our bladders on the box that holds his cremated remains.

Don't fool yourself ^

They have chopped away scads of the masonry to make way for the uniform / flat new facade. They can't take the brick off completely because it is structural. So they are just chooping through stone / beick willy nilly.

Next step for this building will be complete razing in another 50 years.
