The new podium design is more simplistic, but I actually like it better than before. Sure, the chamfered base is more iconic, yet the wide part always struck me as a beer belly, offsetting the tower's otherwise graceful, soaring silhouette. Now it looks like a more fitting, appropriate pedestal for the obelisk above. Detail resolution will make or break this one, but I have faith in the new design. Too bad they already spent so much effort towards building what exists now of the chamfered corner design. These are millions of dollars that are now basically gonna go to waste. I don't know. I kinda wish they'd done it like the Ranier Bank building.

Would that be possible with a building of that size, & especially that height? Particularly with regards to wind sway.

I'm desperate for some new photos! I'm coming up from Richmond for Christmas and have tickets to the memorial so I may just have to do it myself :) Does anyone know how the holidays will effect the construction schedule? Is next week the last real week of work we can expect until the New Year?

As reported today (http://ny.curbed.com/archives/2011/12/13/1_wtc_says_happy_holidays_bmw_guggenheim_site_retu rned.php), 1 WTC has gone festive for the holidays ...
It's officially the holiday season — One World Trade Center says so! Starting tonight, the building will be lit up to celebrate the holidays. Construction workers from Five Star Electric volunteered to decorate the building by placing colored cellophane wrapping around the existing lights. Very DIY! [CurbedWire]
This evening, from West Houston and Thompson Street ...

All dressed up for the holidays. I wonder what the PA will do to "dress" it up for the holidays after it is complete. I suppose the ring of lights at the top could change in color, as could the beacon. I doubt they'll change the beacon's color, though.

BOA and NYT towers make Midtown look like a cluster of spires (when added to Conde Nast's Times Square Tower and ESB). I think it is a fortunate unintended consequence that 1 WTC's spire, rather than act as a nod to the Statue of Liberty, actually looks like Downtown's response to Midtown. I think the combined spires will look terrific taken in from the distance. If I recall, I think 1 WTC's spire will be illuminated and have the ability to change color (correct me if I am wrong), and if that is the case there are some exciting opportunities to coordinate the color schemes of 1 WTC, BOA, and ESB on any given occasion.

I've asked about the spire's lighting scheme elsewhere, and it does sound like it'll be a setup similar to that at Conde Nast and BoA.
I'm kind of hoping they set up a few strips of LEDs on those empty mechanical floors and light them up like the setbacks on the ESB. But that might be a bit too much of a copy-cat move.

I don't know if any of the other photographers have noticed this, but I think it's really hard to get shots of this building from an angle that accents the corners. It really does "lean" in significantly, but renders seem to be the only shots that catch the building at that angle.

I don't know if any of the other photographers have noticed this, but I think it's really hard to get shots of this building from an angle that accents the corners. It really does "lean" in significantly, but renders seem to be the only shots that catch the building at that angle.
Here's how it looks at different times of day from the south-west:

Reminds me of something I forgot about, which was as a high school student back in the 80's entering the Empire State Building and finding a stairwell and trying to climb to the top. I think we made it some 50 floors before getting tired. That sure was another era of innocence, at least in terms of security for access within such public buildings.

Uh....no. We were 15 years old acting silly like 15 year olds sometimes do in a non-destructive manner. We were all honor students who would sometimes skip school and take the Metro North trains into the city. One of us is now a lawyer, another owns his own company that builds stents used in heart surgery, one owns a Manhattan production company that produces television commercials and documentaries, and the other is an international account manager for a European company.

RoldanTTLB

It's complicated. If you recall, the bottom 6 floors are double numbered with mezzanines, but then the office floors start being numbered at 20. The physical floor in the building is a much lower number than the official floor number.
James Kovata

I do recall that the actual number of floors in nowhere near 100, and then you have the larger gap between the floors toward the top of the building. I believe those are the observation floors.

Green Facts About New York’s New One World Trade Center
By Tracey Schelmetic
http://news.thomasnet.com/green_clean/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/M-PANYNJ-World-Trade-Center-holiday-lights.jpg
One World Trade Center’s progress as of December 2011.
There are green buildings, and then there are green buildings. A sustainably built and operated skyscraper is currently rising over the skyline of New York City, and it has more eyes on it than any high-rise building in human history.
Upon its completion in 2013, New York’s One World Trade Center (colloquially known as the “Freedom Tower”), part of a complex currently under construction to replace and honor the World Trade Center Twin Towers and other buildings destroyed on September 11, 2001, will be the tallest building in the United States (Sorry, Chicago!) and one of the tallest buildings in the world. At the very top of the completed skyscraper, the radio antenna that will top the 400-foot spire will reach a symbolic height: precisely 1,776 feet high, in honor of the year of American independence. One World Trade Center, which will feature three million square feet of Class A office space alone (set on 71 floors dedicated for office use) will be accompanied by three other high-rise office buildings and the new National September 11 Memorial & Museum, located at the foot of One World Trade Center. The museum was opened during memorial ceremonies on September 11, 2011.
In addition to being tall and lovely, the building contains some not surprising cutting-edge safety features, including elevators that are housed in a heavily protected central building core, pressurized stairwells that are also built wider to accommodate handicapped building occupants in an emergency, protected “tenant collection” points on each floor, a dedicated stairway for use by fire and other emergency crews, and a specially designed emergency communications systems. An on-site police command center will serve the entire World Trade Center complex of buildings. The new safety standards actually exceed the requirements of the already-stringent New York City Building Code and are expected to become standard in the development of new high-rise buildings in that city.
But here are some things you may not know: once finished, One World Trade Center will be the most environmentally sustainable building of its size in the world. (Seven World Trade Center, which was completed and opened in 2006, was hailed as New York City’s first “green” office tower, but it will be dwarfed by its new companion tower.)
Designed by architect David Childs of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, LLP, One World Trade Center will incorporate not only new architectural and safety standards, but new environmental standards as well, “setting a new level of social responsibility in urban design,” its makers say. Once completed to the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy Efficient Design) Gold standards (only one removed from Platinum, the most stringent standard), One World Trade Center will set the global standard for sustainability, according to the New York Port Authority. (The completed Seven World Trade Center building has already been certified to LEED Gold.) For starters, the building’s designer intend for it to derive about 35 percent of its power from renewable energy sources. Once the building is fully operation, it’s expected to draw as much as 70 percent of its power from green energy: no small feat in a part of the world as densely populated as the New York metro area.
The building features a whole host of green elements, including:
Fuel cells. As of today, 12 United Technologies Corporation (UTC) Power PureCell Model 400 fuel cell stacks have been installed in the building. Ultimately, these fuel cells will provide 4.8 million watts per hour of clean energy when operational, and the combined systems will rank as one of the largest fuel cell installations in the world, according to UTC.
Waste steam recycling. Waste heat output from this fuel cell system will be recycled and used for hot water and heating in the podium of the building’s structure and the entrances, amounting to 70,000 BTUs of high-grade heat and 500,000 BTUs of low-grade heat. Alternatively, with the addition of an absorption chiller, the system is capable of using the waste heat to produce about 50 tons of cooling for the building, eliminating some need to draw power off the grid for air conditioning.
World-class mass transit. Workers commuting to One World Trade Center – and with millions of square feet of office space, there will be a lot of them – will have unprecedented access to mass transit service from the new complex. New climate-controlled corridors will connect the Freedom Tower to The World Trade Center Transportation Hub and the new PATH terminal, 11 NYC Transit subway lines and the new Fulton Street Transit Center, the World Financial Center and ferry terminal, underground parking and retail and dining facilities.
Exceeding code. Overall, the building’s energy performance will exceed code requirements by 20 percent, say its builders.
Recycled rainwater. Rainwater will be claimed and re-used for building cooling purposes as well as fire protection, supplemental cooling and irrigation for the complex’s extensive landscaping needs. The rain water – 60 inches annually in New York, making it one of the rainiest of American cities – will be stored in new high-efficiency evaporative cooling towers located on-site.
Functional memorial. The large, square reflecting pools which mark the “footprints” of the original World Trade Center twin towers feature 360-degree waterfalls and serve as rain collection systems themselves. The names of those who died on September 11 are inscribed on plaques around the “footprint” waterfalls. The names appear dark during the day and glow with internal light at night.
Central chiller. Air conditioning will be supplied, in part, by a highly efficient 12,500-ton Central Chiller Plant (CCP) that uses water from the Hudson River to cool the WTC Transportation Hub, National September 11 Memorial and Museum, retail space and some non-commercial areas. The plant will circulate 30,000 gallons of river water every minute.
Landscaping. The new main plaza of the World Trade Center complex will feature more than 400 trees, all of which were harvested within a 500-mile radius of the city to avoid excessive transportation and limit the amount of greenhouse gas emissions. The trees’ roots will help keep temperatures regulated within the museum that lies below.
Waste material recycling. Construction at the building site has been recycling about 80 percent of waste materials generated at the site, exceeding its own target by about 20 percent.
Recycled building materials. The new World Trade Center is already 75 percent “old,” at least in terms of materials. Everything from the facility’s gypsum boards to ceiling tiles contains a minimum of 75 percent post-industrial recycled content. This reduces the environmental footprint, not only on-site, but reduces the stress on the natural resources and energy needed to produce them, says the tower’s builders.
Taking a pass on cement. The construction of One World Trade Center used so-called “Green Concrete,” – what some believe to be more environmentally responsible than traditional cement – which will save about 12 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions, 8 million kWh of energy and 30,000 gallons of fresh water. (It does, however, contain coal fly ash, which comes with some environmental challenges of its own.)
Renewable energy sources. The facility will make use off-site renewable wind and hydro power.
Clean diesel. During construction, contractors are being required to use only ultra-low sulfur diesel fuels, or “clean diesel” to reduces nitrogen oxide and particulate emissions in and around the construction area. In addition, all construction vehicles are equipped with extra particulate filters to further reduce their environmental impact on air quality.
No VOCs. Any use of materials that contain VOCs – volatile organic compounds, or chemicals that leach from building materials in gaseous form and cause health problems – has been banned from the entire reconstructed World Trade Center complex.
Preventing a “sick” green building. Indoor air quality will be continually monitored with a high-tech system. Carbon dioxide monitors will control ventilation and make the building healthier and improve indoor air quality. If the monitors sense more carbon dioxide than is healthy, they send a signal to the air handler software, telling it more fresh air is needed in that space. The system then automatically increases the fresh air mix in the area. The buildings contain over 3,000 points of monitoring, according to Eduardo Del Valle, Director of Design Management at One World Trade Center.
Daylighting. The buildings will use a green feature called “daylighting,” which means that on bright, sunny days when a large amount of natural daylight is coming into the windows, dimmers will automatically lower the interior lights to reduce energy consumption. Every space within 15 feet of the building’s facade will be equipped with dimming devices. In addition, the buildings’ windows are being constructed of ultra-clear glass, which will allow a maximum amount of light in while blocking excess heat from entering.
Green port-a-potties. During construction, workers are using composting toilets in place of the familiar, chemically smelly portable toilets. Essentially, their waste is being allowed to do what waste was meant to do: mix with other decaying biological products and create nutrient-rich soil. After workers make their “deposits,” the solid waste is channeled into a container half full of saw dust and worms: industrious and conscientious workers who quickly go to work turning the waste into composted soil. The water of urine is evaporated away, leaving only the faintest film of biological material. (Hope you weren’t eating lunch!) In addition to being more efficient, the toilets are smaller and easier to move than large chemical portable toilets: an important consideration when your workers need to answer nature’s call more than 1,500 feet off the ground. Once human waste – both of the liquid and solid variety – is fully processed, more than 90 percent of it is re-used, eliminating the need to constantly empty and re-plenish the water in traditional portable toilets. Workers have praised the system as far superior and less stinky to other high-rise bathroom arrangements.
Low-water bathrooms. Once completed, the building will contain high-efficiency plumbing systems designed to save thirty percent on water consumption over a typical building of its size. To achieve this, builders will install low-flow toilets and devices to limit water use for hand washing.
Save the ozone. Builders have barred the use of ozone-depleting HCFC refrigerants in the building’s mechanical systems.
Sustainable wood. Fully fifty percent of wood used in the buildings of the new World Trade Center was sourced from Forest Stewardship Council-certified (FSC) (www.fscus.org) sustainable harvested forests. FSC certification mandates that the wood used in a building project came from responsible sources and not from endangered trees or forests.
The construction of the new World Trade Center site – and in particular the One World Trade Center Tower – has not been without controversies. The building has been the topic of criticisms over delays (it had originally been slated to open this year; in 2008 the completion date was pushed to 2012 and is now scheduled for opening in April of 2013), over-budget spending (the latest figure is over $3 billion) and accusations of cronyism on the part of former New York Governor George Pataki, who was accused of using his influence to get the winning architect’s bid picked as a personal favor for a friend and campaign contributor. The design itself has been criticized, with petitions circulating that demanded the original World Trade Center Twin Towers be replaced. A media kerfuffle briefly erupted in May of this year when plans for the tower were displayed on the Web site of the New York City’s Department of Finance, with critics complaining the plans could be used by terrorists to attack the building.
The building’s designers and builders have a rather unenviable job in some ways: creating a new building that’s functional, modern, sustainable and unique while at the same honoring the memory of the buildings that stood there before and the people who perished in and around them. And while even the green components of the building have been criticized as overly expensive, these features will do more than save some water, some electricity and some emissions: they, together with the building they grace, will set an inspiring new precedent for skyscrapers for the twenty-first century.

This is a lasting contribution to NYC architecture by NYPD. Even some Liebeskind type architecture would work. Textured metal with jagged openings of glass. As it got close to the top of the base, it would start to blend in more with the main tower. Just a thought.

so wait, that spire is going to be craned and assembled all the way to the tip? no pressambling/hoisting via helicopter/other?

I would not want to be in that crane. Yikes.
Come to think of it, I don't think I'd want to be on any crane.

That animation is completely wrong, innacurate and noisy. Zen once told us the construction method featured on the video is completely opposite to what the real thing will look.
The radome enclosure will be assembled in 20ft sections; the antenna will consist of stacked steel rings made from lattice steel using 9" solid round stock, weighting about 400 tons (only the antenna structure).

I have a question as to how the height is calculated for WTC 1. From the photos O'Daniel posted above, the curtain wall rises above the roofline. Is the non-spire height calculated as 1362' (or 1368') to the ROOF or the height of the curtain wall? Or is it the height of the round antenna base?
ZippyTheChimp
January 6th, 2012, 10:30 AM
I think 1368 feet is to the top of the parapet, and there will be trim that marks 1362 feet. 1400 feet to the top of the communications ring?

The roof slab is at 1334'-8", top of parapet at 1368'-0"; the 3rd ring at 1401'-5"; the top of beacon is at 1776'-0" and the radome enclosure to 1784'.
All of these numbers measured from main lobby floor. Add 3'-4" if you wanna start from the north entrance (lowest open air entrance). ;)

Better yet IMO to have mechanicals inside on a lower floor, with a restaurant & observatory on the top floors with public roof deck. Although nowhere near as bad as originally proposed, this tower is still the triumph of fear

Ok you got me there on the electromagnetic radiation, didn't consider it. I would have hoped though, that since they were going with the only child WTC tower, that they could have designed some sort of shielded cover that would have still allowed some open air observation platform along the permiter

I encourage you to ask; while I might have some answers, sometimes answers lead to more questions, so I'm also learning in this process. ;)
The radome used in this building is quite innovative and unique: it is formed of modular sandwich-panel-system sections, all of them arranged in octagonal modules. What engineers had as challenge was to create a configuration that also needed to stiffen the mast structure in order to face wind loads, not to mention the aesthetics; clear example of this is the helices or stakes recently added to the design, these helices will mitigate vortex shading.

Ehh.....no but looking at O'Daniel's post after yours that small bit of core is not a significant % of the area within the parapet. It's just my position that if they were to use 1,362/1,368 as the roof height to symbolically match the originals, then that space should be occupiable space, as in within the building proper, even if it is a storage area. I'm nitpicking I know.

I'm nitpicking I know.Since 2007, the CTBUH no longer recognizes the "height to roof" category, and includes parapets.
In that light, One World Trade Center was designed to symbolically match the Twin Towers. Assuming a parapet would still be needed to shield the mechanicals, if they built the roof slab at 1368, the CTBUH would have listed the height as 1403.
4WTC is measured the same way, 977 feet to the top of its parapet.

i dont know how much of the 'spiral' will be noticeable. In his scheme, for better or worse, all the buildings related and reacted to eachother. As it will be, its just going to look like "four towers around a park" Architecture by committee.

This particular page (775) has perhaps the best pictures to date of 1 WTC. DKNY's first photo shows just how well the skyline is restored from that famous angle, as do Zippy's photos. I also love the reflection of the glass with the dark sky in 325's photos. 10-1/2 years on and witnessing the rebirth never gets old.

I don't know about best pictures, TallGuy, newhannibal shoots some amazing pics and he's not on this page... :-)
But I have to comment on the rebirth not getting old. I have to admit that I stopped paying attention to the downtown skyline once the Towers fell. I don't know if it was grieving (I saw them falling in real time), or what. I absolutely HATED the skyline without them. But once WTC1 started going up, I look at the skyline every day. Every single day, day and night. There is a lot to be said about rebirth...

I'm still fuzzy about the beacon at the top.
First I heard it was going to be a steady beam of light going up into the sky.
Then a steady burning intense light going out in perpendicular to the ground.
Then a pair of revolving lights like the top of the Eiffel tower.
Then a pair of revolving flashing lights of morse code.
Then a fixed light burning perpendicular to the ground flashing morse code in all directions.
For Christ sakes which is it?!

With the substantial square footage of sloping walls on tower 1, is accumulating snow and ice sliding down a potential issue with this tower? Just curious what's going to happen with all the snow that hits it in a real storm...
lofter1
January 23rd, 2012, 09:18 PM
The slope of the 1 WTC is so steep I doubt there will be much accumulation.
Zen would have been able to answer that one right away. And would have posted diagrams to show the degree of slope (with big areas on the plans blacked out, no doubt).

Snow wont stick to the glass because the building, like all others, will be heated from the inside and the temperature will be too high to get any accumulation.
I did experience one problem last week in Jersey City with the southwestern sloping facade... from a certain angle, the glare from the sun in the late afternoon was as blinding as looking directly into the sun.

As for those EWR arrivals, flight crews will know of the glare problem and be prepared for it. Best option is simply to fly the ILS approach.

Seems to have been a delay in steel erection the past few weeks. Could it be the billing dispute between the PA and DCM Erectors, or just the cold weather?

Definitely a slow down here and on 4. Issue I believe is that the supplier can't continue to fund production of more steel w/o cash up front from the WTC developers. Effectively the supplier needs the developers to be its lender.

Why not the just the typical ebb-and-flow of construction progress: job sequencing and that sort of thing. What, may I ask, reason do you have to believe that their are payment issues involved. If you can not mention your 'contacts' on the subject - I fully understand.

So I'm guessing they're not going to build the radome antenna like the original? :)

No chance. Even if you class the roof slab level as "topping out" they still have 13/14 floors to go, about 150'. At the rate they're going they'll be lucky to have a party before the end of the summer. And that still leaves the 400' or so of structure above that.

I thought topping out meant the structural steel , not the floors, reached the top.

Actually the chances are very very good for them topping out by the end of April, if not then certainly by the beginning of May...There are 12 floors left and 11 weeks until the end of April...now I know these floors are higher and may take a bit longer...I'm confident we will make it...at least by May!

I think what we all mean by topping out is topping out at 1368 ft, or roof level, because of the symbolism attached to the original twin towers.
Mid-may seems like a strong possibility, assuming no weather delays.

Those photos, (and video) have been great viewing this morning: and have me wondering about the completion date. I am reminded a news report I read some time ago, regarding the approximate 'completion date' http://www.nyc-tower.com/2008/03/21/completion-date-of-2012-reconfirmed/
........EXCERPT - Silverstein, the president and CEO of Silverstein Properties, was quoted by Ian Ritter while addressing the complex’s expected 2012 finish. “Can you count on this schedule?” he asked before stating, “You bet you can.”........
If by 'completion' the term is intended to mean a 'totally complete exterior' AND a finished 'interior' ready for occupancy; then a 2012 'completion' will be a close call. As far as the building topping-out, in layman's term, I take that to mean that the building has reached its full height of 1776' feet: which includes that tower structure on the top..
BTW, Anyone know exactly what floor they are up to at this point?

Thanks, I thought it was closer to the top than that: so 13 more floors left. I have made a bet (non-monetary) with somebody; and with 13 more floors to go before the 'structural steel' topping-out ceremony I am feeling confident that I am going to win. (LOL)
Thanks for news - 92 going on 105. It is getting close.

I've been working down here for over a year. And if precedent means anything they won't make it. Over the past few months DCM have barely been able to pay for their fuel, steel has been delayed at every floor and there is still 4 to 6 weeks of dodgy weather. They had steel to 81 in mid-September, that's approx 21 weeks to put 11 floors up. Roof slab is 105, leaving 13 floors to go. I'll predict a topping out party to coincide with 09-11-12. (And that's not allowing for the extreme liberties taken in declaring "topping out". Several floors below the top isn't unusual).

Thanks again NYB, those views from afar are just terrific: I have to try to get out of town more often. HeHe
Also, on your Grand Army Plaza video at about 1.05 your zoom-in shot of the Beekman Tower had an interesting, and probably unintentional, juxtaposition: the 'curvy' tower next to a billboard with the large printed words "GO CURLY".
Do a replay: and 'check-it-out' folks.
