View Full Version : Banning of forum members

Some forum members expressed uneasiness about recent banning so I would like to offer some clarification.

I make use of two axioms when making administrative decisions: first – the forum is a place for CIVIL discussion, second – the forum is MODERATED.

The moderators ensure that the discussion is interesting, lively and civil. Understandably, not everyone would agree with every decision that moderators make. In such a case you can email me at webmaster@wirednewyork.com and complain about it.

At the same time I cannot allow anyone to ignore the moderators. If you disagree with moderator’s decision, you are free to express your disagreement; however you can not ignore that decision.

If a forum member would choose to ignore moderator’s decision, the only option to get attention of that forum member would be to ban him.

Generally speaking, the banning is reversible. The ban can be lifted once the issue is resolved. That is only true when the banned member was civil in his arguments. When the banned member sends me an email with the most filthy insults, it only confirms that I did a right decision by banning him.

Similarly, if I banned someone for trying to blackmail me with a purpose to remove one of the forum moderators, it’s a permanent ban, since I find such behavior uncivil and unacceptable.

Thank you for this information. There is one forum member that was recently banned...

May I email you asking why he was banned, or is it really not my business?

I was banned from another forum
http://www.aardvarktravel.net/chat/viewtopic.php?t=5363&highlight=payphone
(way back when I was doing my payphone site).
I think those guys were a bit harsh. I find it's very easy for dumb situations to escalate.
You guys are a lot nicer, thank God!!

Please forward the spam message to me. Spamming is not allowed in any form on this forum. I will ban that user so there is no need for you to add him to Ignore List.

Thomas... you paint a picture as though you were hard done to. To set the record, perhaps I should point out that:

1. Advertising is now allowed on our board.
2. A message to this effect is posted at the top of each forum.
3. You ignored this warning and posted ads.
4. You were warned.
5. You continued to post ads.
6. In response to one warning, you posted the image at http://www.worldpayphones.com/europe/fra-exhib.jpg which is far from family friendly, and we have kids on our board as well as adults.

Harsh maybe, but IMO you were given ample warning and had a disregard for other members of the board.

From time to time it is neccesary to ban a member from a public forum area. Being a frequent bulletin board user especially a VB board, I been in lots of situations. As an administrator I have probably banned only 10 people in the years of my involvement.

In my opinion, Moderators should never be questioned... Generally their job is to maintain the board as they see fit and are assigned these right by the administrator. They work hard to keep the forum busy and would never ban a member unless it is really neccesary.

If your banned from a forum you have two options...

1 - visit again in the future to see if the ban has been lifted...
or
2 - leave peacefully and learn from the experience this way you don't run into any other trouble on similar boards and/or forums.

The one thing you never do is re-register to ask why you have been banned...

If the administrator doesn't want you on the board, your IP address will eventually be banned and you will not be able to re-register again.

just my two cents...

Seems like there's been some increased banning as of late...

Not trying to push anything, but I was "suspended" for "quoting".

In all due respect, I don't really see why "quoting" is a big thing. I complied as asked, becasue I'm bigger than to be banned again. But all I ask is that if there is a bigger issue than "quoting" going on, PM me.

I was banned once, and I never fully understood why that happened. Can learn from mistakes when you don't know what you did.

Alex, you should re-read my PM in which I have clearly stated that the reason you were banned is because you ignored my PM regarding the posting guidelines. Banning you was an effective tool to get your full attention.

Regarding your previous ban - I recommend you take an effort to understand the reasons you were banned. If you are going to understand that less than crystall clear, I am going to ban you again until you do.

I suspected that NewYorkCityboy would be banned; what was the "official" reason given to him?

I suspected that NewYorkCityboy would be banned; what was the "official" reason given to him?

I banned him and the reason is spam. He made a mockery of forum members by posting information that he knew was either false or would rile up a response, in each and every thread. While some thought it was funny, others took him as serious, unfortunatly myself at first included thought that he was perhaps just a little slow, even for those who thought it was funny his constant posting of nonsense would eventually detract from the educated opinions and discourse this forum is used to.

Here were some clinchers, basically every post he made:

NYC Music Thread:
"Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way."

No one says music becomes more satisfying the more commercial it becomes. Unless to rile up a response. Yet some members bit, others just made fun of the kid, neither contributing to what this forum is about.

"thx, i appriciate the advice. but im pretty sure that i wont be conned. im plenty smart since i was one of the only ones to graduate my highschool with a C average. thanks for the advice though."

"I'm from a little town in Kentucky and Im goin to move to the big apple and become a millonare model and actor. I mean how hard is it that shit guys? Honestly im just wondering. You big city boys dont have rock hard pecks like me...do ya?"

Rile up a response.... He wanted us to get angry at either his small-mindedness or his arrogance, what ever to waste bandwidth so that he can laugh at our responses.

"What r you thinking grilling in new yord city anyways? If you want to show that you have class and be in style i strongly suggest u start going out to eat at very expensive, top of the line, popular nyc resteraunts. Not only is it sociable but it taste better. I would recomend Dorsia, its a amazing place with great food. If you need help getting reservations just make another post."

Let's rile up a response by showing my ignorance and insulting people at the same time, I'm sure people will respond...

"Just all of my friends here in Kentucky and everyone on all of the city life forums say that chicago is better because it has better food, more celebrites (Micheal Jordan, Oprah) has better wheather, has a great skyline(sears tower) and is an overall great city. Thats what they say but i never belived a word of it. I always knew that the nyc was the best, even if everyone else thinks that chicago is."

This post really proved to me what NYCBoy was really all about. He wasn't just a little slow, he was just a sicko trying to elicit negative responses. It actually takes a little bit of intelligence to know Michael Jordan and Oprah reside in Chicago, having a knowledge of celebrities he would know many more resided in New York, instead he decided to insult everything he knew were strong-suits of New York over Chicago to again elicit negative responses.

Lastly a picture speaks a thousands words for anyone who saw the picture he posted.

NYCBoy was given too many chances, he was a spammer, and hopefully we won't have another sicko like him for a long while.

Thank you, Stern. I felt a little guilty when I saw how much time you spent answering my question, until I realized that your answer was all the members and guests of this website.

(Now don't y'all go posting: "Stern did it just for YOU, Rapunzel, and you SHOULD feel guilty.";))

Whenever someone like NewYorkCityboy joins a website, there's a conflict of interest in my brain. On the one hand, it feels great to get a spit-up-your-coffee laugh just by looking up someone's latest post. (That picture!!) On the other hand, I've seen people like him wrecking websites again and again. Alas, NewYorkCityboy had to go back to his Kentucky pasture...

Hey, no fair, spam was a staple in the diet of every infantryman in the US Army during WWII. Kinda funny how spam has evolved huh? There are even recipes on spam, such as pickled spam with a whisper of champagne. Should be more like a shout or standing ovation. Been awhile since I've been on here. Happy holidays to all.

Those two guys have been beating on it for weeks -- and it's still there ;)
