HK's new tallest. *Cesar Pelli is quite an architect.
Of course, 1 IP came first at 700 feet or so, so Goldman Sachs JC is pretty much the middle child of the bunch.

Definitely a candidate for most phallic building of the year.

clever. *Well, it does look like one. *But its an awesome building. *Seems like the chinese like Phallic structures...maybe it compensates for something...:)

Plus, since the number eight is considered good luck in China, most of the exceptionally tall buildings there are between 80 to 88 stories--mostly 88 stories to double the good luck, a la Jin Mao and 2IFC. *Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur are 88 stories as well, partially because Malaysia has a very large Chinese minority. *Before technology permitted construction of buildings of that height, many skyscrapers in China had floorplans that looked like the Chinese character for the number eight.

Yes, it's phallic.
Nouvel's Torre Agbar in Barcelona, Foster's Swiss Ré, and now this one.
Well, after the anonymous box, it seems like cities are eager to express their masculinity.

March 9th, 2003, 01:35 PM
Yeah, I'd post a picture of Torre Agbar, but I'm afraid some people would take it the wrong way.

What about Nina Tower?
Fabb
March 9th, 2003, 04:53 PM
The construction is very slow. I'd say 20 percent of the tower is completed.
Its location, Tswen Wan, is far from the points of interest. Not even close to the metro station.
TLOZ Link5
March 9th, 2003, 08:47 PM
Nina Tower is near the airport, right Fabb?
Fabb
March 10th, 2003, 03:52 AM
Not really.
The HK island is closer to Tswen Wan than the airport.
But on your way to the airport, you usually get really close to Tsuen Wan an Nina Tower.
TLOZ Link5
March 10th, 2003, 06:37 PM
Ah.
I heard that the Nina development was originally slated to be the WTB, but they had to scale it back because it was in the flight path of planes departing the airport.

Now, I have to admit that one of the reasons why I like this tower so much has little to do with its own qualities.
It's only that it's the building that reminds me most of the the WTC.
Each of the twin towers had similar proportions and the same emphasis on verticality.
And they stood near the water, too.
Impossible not to make the connection.
I was moved.

It is a little phallic, isn't it?
Fabb
March 23rd, 2003, 05:53 AM
Undoubtedly.
Swiss-Ré and Torre Agbar are even more explicit.
That picture was taken from the sky-lobby of Pei's BoC. The access to the public is authorized. It's a not-so-well kept secret in HK.

Not even done and it's already a "full member" (heh). *Fabb have you seen it up close and personal? *Wonder how that taper looks from the ground. *I agree with you about the WTC but I better not go there. *:)

I'd love to go to Hong Kong, particularly when the SARS scare has died down. *I'm sure Victoria Harbour's waterfront will look spectacular with 2IFC and 7 Union Square forming a gateway to the city.
Fabb
April 25th, 2003, 03:48 AM
I'm not sure they'll form a gateway.
Unless, of course, you enter the city by boat.
US will be taller, more isolated than 2IFC, far from the hills.

HONG KONG ~ NEW YORK
SKYSCRAPERS IN THE GLOBAL CITY
Lighthouse International, Ames Auditorium, 111 E. 59th St.
between Lexington and Park Avenues
CESAR PELLI AND WILLIAM PEDERSEN, ARCHITECTS OF THE WORLD’S TALLEST BUILDINGS, DISCUSS SKYSCRAPERS IN THE GLOBAL CITY AT A SKYSCRAPER MUSEUM PROGRAM
In Hong Kong, architects Cesar Pelli and William Pedersen of KPF have designed supertall skyscrapers and commercial centers—one completed, the other in construction—that rise over train stations and mass transit hubs. These towers and others that are now, or will be, the world’s tallest buildings pose possible models for downtown New York.
On the evening of Monday, May 5, The Skyscraper Museum will sponsor a symposium featuring William Pedersen of Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates and Cesar Pelli of Cesar Pelli & Associates. The architects will present their supertall towers in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and other global cities and reflect on their experiences with mega-developments in relation to rebuilding in Lower Manhattan. A discussion with Alex Garvin, Lower Manhattan Development Corporation Vice President for Planning, Design & Development, follows the architects’ talks.
As design principals of their internationally renowned firms, Pelli and Pedersen are responsible for buildings that are now, or are projected to be, the world's tallest towers. The current record holders, the twin Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, designed by Mr. Pelli, measure 450m (1483 ft.) to the top of their stainless steel spires. The World Financial Center in Shanghai, designed by Mr. Pedersen, scheduled for completion in 2007, will rise to 492m (1614 ft.).
Reservations are required for the program. Members of The Skyscraper Museum: free; students $5, others $10. To RSVP, email admin2@skyscraper.org or call: 212.968.1961.

An awesome building...I wonder what KPF and Pelli have to say in the meeting. Hopefully they can persuade NYC to build taller buildings (1000+ feet). We're running out of room too...

It was first posted by Inspire at SkyscraperPage.
I think it's interesting because the way 2IFC is lit up is temporary. It'll look much different, and probably less subtle, in a couple of months.
