Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman dies

2 February 2014 Last updated at 14:21 ET

Oscar-winning American actor Philip Seymour Hoffman has been found dead in New York, police sources have said.
The 46-year-old was found in his Manhattan apartment after a friend called the emergency services.

Medical officials have not yet commented on the the cause of death.

Hoffmann made his name in the 1990s in films including Boogie Nights and the Big Lebowski, before winning the best actor Oscar for his 2005 portrayal of writer Truman Capote.

Throughout his career he featured in independent films as well as Hollywood blockbusters such as Mission Impossible III.

His latest role was in the Hunger Games series of films.

As well as films, he also starred in Broadway plays and was nominated for two Tony Awards.

British actor John Hurt, who starred alongside Hoffman in the 2003 drama Owning Mahowny, said the news had hit him "very hard".

"He was a great actor, a great member of the film and theatre community. An extraordinary talent, directorially as well as an actor. He'll be greatly missed," he said.

Last year Hoffman told celebrity news website TMZ that he had sought treatment for drug abuse.

He told the website he had used prescription drugs, and briefly heroin, before seeking help.

Another bright light extinguished by drugs in the most sad, lonely and pathetic way; mere blocks from where Heath Ledger did the same to himself. It is a cliche way of dying among actors.

So so sad. PSH was a fierce actor. His performance as Jamie in Long Day's Journey Into Night (http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2012/03/11/theater/20120311-hoffman-6.html) on Broadway back in 2003 was spectacular. Wrenching. Searing. A man desperately in need of love but unable to find it, taking it out on the world around him. He was the perfect counterpoint to the equally brilliant Vanessa Redgrave.

Damn he was an excellent actor. Haven't seen 'Capote' yet, but soon. Unable right now to catch so many great B'way shows (time, money) and I wish I'd seen this one. He could disappear into his roles so much more than his younger colleagues who get all the hype, which is what made him so great.

Early reports are saying he had a needle in his arm, with bags of heroin next to him, and empty bags, too. I thought he'd settled his demons when he fell in love and had children. What a lonely wasteful end.

Philip Seymour Hoffman dead at 46: Actor knew he was 'gonna die' if he continued drug use: report

A new report says the actor, who was found dead Sunday, told a friend before Christmas that he knew that he could die if he didn't stop taking drugs. Additionally, another report claims that a 'very sweaty' Hoffman withdrew $1,200 and gave the money to two men carrying messenger bags. Police are now looking at his cellphone records and computer records, as well as looking for video footage of his visitors to try and identify the Oscar winner's dealers.

Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his apartment Sunday morning of an apparent drug overdose.

Philip Seymour Hoffman (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Philip+Seymour+Hoffman) knew he was dancing with death every time he reached for a needle — but he couldn't stop himself.
"If I don't stop I know I'm gonna die," the doomed actor told a pal not long before Christmas.
But six weeks before he died, Hoffman went on another heroin binge, TMZ.com reported Tuesday (http://www.tmz.com/2014/02/04/philip-seymour-hoffman-dies-dead-heroin-aa/).

The body of Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, 46, is removed from his apartment Sunday.

Desperate and increasingly disheveled, Hoffman tried going cold turkey only to succumb again, the website reported (http://www.tmz.com/2014/02/04/philip-seymour-hoffman-dies-dead-heroin-aa/).
Hoffman, who had been clean and sober for more than two decades, also began drinking again — clouding his already shaky judgment even more.
Seeking a safe place and support, Hoffman started going to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings again a short walk from his West Village apartment—- a familiar and friendly place where he had been held in high esteem because he'd been sober for so long, a friend said.

A man looks down at a makeshift memorial for Hoffman outside the building where he was found dead.

Then, on Saturday, a "very sweaty" Hoffman made six withdrawals totaling $1,200 from the ATM at the D'Agonstino's on Greenwich Ave., a source said.
He then turned over the cash to two men carrying messenger bags, the Daily Mail reported (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2551309/Philip-Seymour-Hoffman-kicked-family-home-using-heroin-house-How-tragic-star-split-wife-drug-spiral-images-slumped-unconscious-flight-three-days-death-emerge.html).
The next day, Hoffman was found dead with a needle in the bathroom of his rented Bethune Street apartment.

Police also found 70 baggies of heroin — 50 of them unopened, sources said.
Among the five prescription drugs also found in the pad was buprenorphine, which heroin addicts take to help kick a habit, the sources said.

The results of the autopsy on the 46-year-old Oscar winner are expected to be released Tuesday. But police a pretty sure they know what killed him.

"We still think it's going to be an overdose," an NYPD source said.
Police are now checking Hoffman's cellphone records and computer - and looking for video footage of his visitors—- to try and identify his dealers.
They are also trying to determine the origin of the heroin.

Bobby Cannavale was among the celebrities paying their respects Tuesday on Jane St.

Some of the envelopes had the words "Ace of Spades" written on them and others were stamped with "Ace of Hearts."
Both are brands of heroin often cut with a powerful pain reliever called fentanyl that have become a plague in Pennsylvania, where 22 people have died of overdoses.
Police, however, have not seen Ace of Hearts heroin in New York City since 2012.

Hoffman's downward spiral apparently accelerated after he moved out of the Jane St. apartment that he had shared with longtime girlfriend Mimi O'Donnell and their three kids.
He was found by his pal, screenwriter David Bar Katz, who had gone over to check up on him.
On his Facebook page, Katz posted an undated picture of a laughing Hoffman clutching a mug. “He is so beautiful,” Katz wrote.

Philip Seymour Hoffman won an Oscar for his performance in 2005's 'Capote.' He had been sober for nearly two decades, but had fallen back into using drugs and drinking.

Since Hoffman’s death, a steady stream of celebrity friends such as Cate Blanchett and Justin Theroux has come by to console O'Donnell.
On Tuesday, actor Bobby Cannavale, carrying a shopping bag, pressed the buzzer.
“Who is it?” a woman’s voice came over the intercom.
“Bobby,” Cannavale replied.
“Bobby who?” the woman asked.
“Bobby Cannavale,” the actor answered.
He was buzzed inside.
Funeral plans for Hoffman were still being worked out.
