Lauren Bacall -- one of the leading ladies of the Golden Age of Hollywood -- is dead ... TMZ has learned.

A family member tells us Bacall had a massive stroke Tuesday morning at her home.

Bacall -- who famously starred with and married Humphrey Bogart -- starred in a slew of movies, including "The Mirror Has Two Faces," "How to Marry a Millionaire" and "Designing Woman."

One of Bacall's biggest movies was with Bogart -- "Key Largo" in 1948.

Damn I thought she'd be around longer because she was such a tough old dame. On IMDB she was 'rumored' to be filming a new movie with no set release date, but it's good to see she still wanted to work.

I read her autobiography 'By Myself and Then Some' (an updated version of her original '77 'By Myself'). In it she has said that her time with Bogart was the happiest time in her life. She also told a great story of when she first started seeing him.

Her mother, who lived in NY, happened to be visiting her in L.A. Bogie called late at night drunk somewhere along the freeway and wanted Bacall to come pick him up. Of course her mother pleaded with her, told her he was a no good s.o.b., told her not to go (Mothers are like that), and she writes "...but I didn't care. I was on my way to see my man." I thought "Yes!" How many women out there could relate to that? Turns out their marriage was the most stable and loving out of all 4 of his. What a life!

I thought she was awesome and in many ways way ahead of her time. Not to mention, gorgeous.
