Well, here I am typing at my brand-spankin' new laptop in my dorm at NYU. *I'm all moved in, essentially, with just a few loose ends to tie up (like getting a phone). *I also bought some classic New York cityscape posters for my room. *Very nice
I'm still trying to work this newfangled comp, though. *I'll have to download AOL myself because it didn't come as software

Tell me about NYU, and are you living at Silver Towers?

NYU is going pretty well so far. *I have a suite with four other roommates in Brittany Hall. *I've learned that it was a first-rate hotel before NYU acquired it, because the rooms are huge. *Lotsa space, nice guys I'm living with, and I already have close friends who go here. *It's only the first day, so obviously I don't have much time to socialize. *But then again nobody else does either.

Is it customary for American students to reside on the campus even when home is nearby?

Most prefer to, it's a step towards independence.

An expensive one for the parents.

TLOZ, have you had a chance to check out the neighborhood yet? Any favorite spots?

I especially like Johnny Rocket's, a nifty-50s diner on Greene Street. *Freaking delicious burgers. *Silver Spurs is pretty nice also, but I haven't been there in a while. *Caliente has excellent Mexican food.
The Kimmel Center is awesome. *It's such a gigantic complex, with a big theater, a dining hall, lots of student events, computer labs, game rooms, etc. *And the central staircase is really neat. Sooner or later I need to take pictures. *I'll ask for a digital camera for Christmas or something. *They have karaoke at 9:00 tonight. *I am so there

Have your parents begun to argue about what to do with your room now that you are finally out? * :)

Lucky you! *When I started NYU in '96, my parents only had enough money to put me up in Rubin Hall low cost triple. *That's three guys in a room about half the size of my current studio apartment. *Smart choice on Brittany, though - the new dorms like U-Hall were built to be dorms, with tiny rooms, and no old-world charm in them at all. *If I had my pick of where to go, I'd probably go with Carlyle.
Since I left, they've demolished the old Kimmel center and built a brand new one *I'd love to see some photos.
As for good places to eat, there is, I believe, a Krispy Kreme on Waverly, or 8th street. *For more upscale dining, there's Strip House and Knickerbocker stakehouses on University Place. *There are also some nice shawarma, sushi, and cafe places just South of Washington Square Park on Thompson St, MacDougal, and Sullivan. *There is a Subway on W. 4th st. *If you are really short on cash, there is Gray's Papaya on 6th Ave. with 75-cent hot dogs (it was 50 cents up until a few years ago...)
A very underrated place at NYU is the Cantor Center. *There they often show free indie films. *Check it out.

I have some photos of the Kimmel Center in this thread (http://www.wirednewyork.com/forum/topic.cgi?forum=4&topic=533) for starters - would always welcome more - some from inside would be nice.
