Some things of course, are just too much

The parts of Long Island I've seen were extremely monotonous, regardless of their affluence. In this case, the hills help a little.

What the largely uniform collection of suburbs seems to miss most is genuine towns, like those Westchester has. Villages like Port Jefferson lack consistency.

Nice!

Speaking of geniune towns, Qtrain, do you think you could do Rockville Centre one of these days? One of my really good friends is from there.

Villages like Port Jefferson lack consistency.

Please explain "consistency." Are you talking about architectural styles?
If you want to see quaint architecturally-consistent historic villages, check out Stony Brook or Setauket. Port Jeff is more disparate because it has gone through boom-and-bust cycles several times in its history, while the smaller neighboring villages were always more rural in character.

There are real villages all over the North Shore. True, they're nearly impossible to find amonst the ugly sprawl that has come to surround them. But there are some gems if you look for them.

I meant relatively "complete" towns like Yonkers and White Plains. I'm not interested in quaint architectural uniformity. Port Jeff looked like a hollow fishing village theme park consisting mainly of a near Potemkin Main Street, with narrow sidewalks and plenty of parking lots on both sides. I was there off-season so it was pretty much dead. There are some picturesque Victorian houses on the outskirts, but they don't contribute much to the public realm.
