October 2, 2003 -- Organizers unveiled a proposal yesterday for a $170 million American Museum of African Heritage in the heart of Harlem.
"There aren't any museums of African heritage in the entire state of New York. And yet, New York state has one of the largest populations of African-Americans in the nation," said the Rev. Adolph Roberts, a Baptist minister who is leading the effort.

Roberts said organizers hope to raise the funds for the museum, which will be situated on Seventh Avenue between 125th and 127th streets, through foundations, corporations and individuals.

He would not say how much has been raised so far.

Roberts said no comparable institution exists anywhere in the country, calling the Studio Museum in Harlem "basically a gallery."

The promoters unveiled an artist's rendering of a 10-story building at a news conference at Amy Ruth's restaurant in Harlem.

They said a "virtual" museum should be online by next summer.
