Looking for ideas

Hi,

I am a writer looking for some ideas. I am doing a cancer benefit and will be using my now passed grandmother as the inspiration of our team.
The closer the benefit gets the more I realize I don't know anything about her besides the basics. I thought some of you might have some ideas about what I should try. I went on ancestry.com and its $30.00 to join.

Her name was Helen Theresa Baumann, born in Brooklyn, died in New Jersey in 1991

There's not much I can suggest but going to ellisisland.com and finding out her heritage regarding where her [grand?]parents emigrated from, what their names were, etc. If you already have that information, I'm not sure what else to offer for advice.
