Do you think it's possible to have customized icons or icons we can upload?

Edward
October 25th, 2003, 09:18 AM
You can use only gallery avatars.

Can we make requests for new avatars to add to the gallery?

Edward

You can make requests, however, I want to keep certain style of avatars, and I suppose not every request would be compatible with my vision.

And don't you diss Colin, fool! :P

Well, in all seriousness I'd like to make an avatar request of my own:

http://www.thebluepearls.com/images/peter.jpg

Peter Green, English blues god, one of the best guitarists who ever lived, in the same band (John Mayall's Bluesbreakers) as Eric Clapton and bassist John McVie (which recruited Keith Richards following the departure of all three) before founding Fleetwood Mac in 1968, borrowing the surnames of McVie and Bluesbreakers dummer Mick Fleetwood to create the band's moniker.

If you accept it, crop it as you will. But you might want to ask thebluepearls.com for permission, I guess; although I've seen other sites use this same exact jpeg.

These small images are called avatars. They are displayed next to your username on all posts that you make. You may only select an avatar from the Forum Avatar List (http://www.wirednewyork.com/forum/misc.php?do=showavatars). Senior Members may request a custom avatar.

When I was first browsing this site, I noticed the large disparity between the number of male and female avatars. My (erroneous) conclusion was that this site was a male-oriented perspective of New York City.

My intellectual curiosity kept me on here: "What exactly IS a man's perspective of NYC?" After reading many posts as a guest, I realized that there is no gender bias on this site; there are simply more male avatars because there are more men.

I wonder, though: how many female guests browsed the avatars, came to the same initial conclusion I came to, and never joined?

(Looking forward to being part of this site!)

Thank you for directing me to that link. There will have to be a lot more of us letting our hair down on here before you turn into a total liar.;)
_____

My question was a suggestion in disguise. It was in such disguise, I myself didn't even know it was a suggestion. (Halloweeen overload.)

The "chicken and egg" effect should be looked into with regard to avatars. Consider a perhaps not-hypothetical situation:

Female guests look through the avatars and notice that there's a high number of male avatars. They *erroneously* conclude that it's a male-slanted site. Yet other female guests see that none of the twelve avatars represent them, and they conclude that they are "not the type" for this site. The staff here sees that with the number of females joining and being active in this site, putting more female avatars up is not a tremendous priority...

I don't know the requirements for a custom avatar. I believe it's senior member status, but don't quote me on that, its an administrators decision (Edward), not mine. If there was a way to link the avatar selection page to who had them...

I don't know, have an icon next to them indicating whether they are taken or not. If you select one of the pictures (click on it) it would take you to a page where it would show a list of everyone that has that icon and the date of their last post....

As for getting a custom... I did not see that option on mine at all. I guess I have not posted enough yet... ;)

When you are logged on, click on your user name where it say's Welcome and you should see User CP at top left corner, select edit avatar, then select browse, and when you have chosen your avatar from your own computer you must click on save changes button, whch is below the browse button.

I agree, Peter Green is one of the Best, if not the finest in England. To my mind he's better than the over-rated Eric Clapton, but there again so is Jimmy Page. Green has the blues inside him, Clapton plays the blues.

I think of Clapton as being more of a composer.

Speaking of which:

AVATAR (http://avatar.substance001.info/)

The cool trailer (http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/film/2598393/Be-the-first-to-see-the-trailer-for-new-James-Cameron-film-Avatar.html) for the new film from James Cameron, due out in December :D

OFF TOPIC!!! ;)

I know, I am a bit apprehensive about this, after having watched the cartoon series (BTW, it was very well done).

Not the least of which being their choices of characters, or people's outrage that Ang would be caucasian..... :p (I think they changed that)

uh... this film has NOTHING to do with the tv series, Avatar: The Last Airbender... its an original script by James Cameron.

If you want the whole plot given away (as opposed to most if it, as in the trailer), check out the plot on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar_(2009_film))...

My bad, seeing how "Avatar, the last airbender" is also in production....

Yes - another project with some overly heavy expectations attached to it (and the chances of crushing a career).

Would it be possible for any of us to place a WNY "trademark claim" on these generic avatars (e.g. my current choice, upper left, of Colin Ferrell) once we are senior members?

I kind of like my new one and am thinking of using it from now on. It sort of feels like me. It doesn't really look like me, but then I'm not a movie star, so it works out fine that way. As far as I can tell no one else is using it at the moment.

Another example: Can't imagine anyone but Lofter donning that crazy Rocky-the-Flying-Squirrel (Gagarin) headgear. Can he (I haven't consulted, so this is just a hypothetical) keep it all to himself? Wouldn't it be weird to have another "Lofter" popping up on the threads?

This would mean depleting, however slowly, the sets of generic images, so others would have to be added accordingly. Perhaps we can suggest new options so as not to add to Edward's work. What do y'all think?

I may be mistaken but I think those images are supplied by Vbulletin.

Another example: Can't imagine anyone but Lofter donning that crazy Rocky-the-Flying-Squirrel (Gagarin) headgear.I remember Lofter changed it once some time ago. It caused much confusion, and generated complaints from many, so he went back to Yuri.

I guess he's stuck with it.

I would think if generic avatars were 'copyrighted' then we would run out. The best way is to make your own custom avatar.

Okie-dokie then. I will search for my own.
(Zippy, I may not be the first, but I am the only one using it right now. I checked yesterday. So, for now, this one says "hbcat".)

Another question: If an image of a public figure is widely available on the internet, does that mean it is public domain? Do I have to ask before I use an image of, say, Colin Ferrell?

What will you do if some joker named Yuri happens along, chooses "lofter2" or "lofter_one" for a board name, and then steals your avatar? Could lead to litigation, no?
