Is there a cab fare calculator anywhere? Also , how much would a cab from 42nd to the lower east side cost?

Basically from 42nd the bowery. I have been to New York twice and have always used the subway for everything, but i want to take cabs next time. Its such a beautiful city, and i want to see more above ground.

Thanks,

Nicholas

The initial fare for a cab ride is $2.00, and it increases by 30 cents every 1/5 miles (four blocks along avenues or one block between avenues), which would equal to about 90 seconds on a relatively smooth ride. It charges for time stopped in traffic, also.

For that trip I would guess around $10.

Anyone?

Sounds about right.

It's also customary to give the driver a tip, around 20 percent or just calling things even if you give him/her a bill that exceeds the fare by a dollar or so.
