Fantastic photos, ddny! What a lot of visual interest you found; almost every picture is a feast of color and texture and form. The life of the city is in the streets.

Much of the interest derives from the fact that London's streets are not straight, so you usually see buildings at the end of the street, which happens much less in New York.

Paternoster Square (6th pic from end) sure is an improvement over the former surroundings of St. Paul's. It's so new it looks like an architectural model. Not many people in it yet; what time was that picture taken, and what day of the week? Did you like it?

Your photo of London phone booths brings this to mind: http://www.city-journal.org/html/6_3_a1.html

Thanks ablarc! I believe I took that picture on Friday in the morning. The area was fairly new. I liked it, but I also like London as a whole in general.

Trust me, if you had to live with them the windy roads wouldnt seem so great. People are always lost because of the un-signposted junctions and the spaghetti streets - not joking.

P.S. Park ave has a great 'interruption' the Met Life building and the Helmsley building ( which I have always thought look great together).

From aerials, street life, cafes, apartments, civic squares, statues, neons, gothic structures, cobble stones, fashions, street life, churches, modern structures, N. Foster's St Mary's Axe (aka 'the cocoon'), sex busineses, a Chinese gazebo, meeting places, stores, etc. etc. etc.....

Thanks for sharing your beautiful pics of London with the Wired New York forumers ddny. :D

The neons are the billboards at picadilly circus.

Theyve just had that new tv screen put at the top, it used to be just a neon.

Surely the SANYO and/or the TDK signs either light up and/or flash @ night. With new new TV screen "put @ the top", let's hope it is one of those great flat plasma screens which are even more fabulous than neons (Well I guess)

BTW A slightly older shot of Piccadilly Circus @ night but still with the SANYO and TDK illuminateds:

Yes it is like a plasma screen.

The sanyo and TDK neons do 'flash' at night, yes.

I think London is dreadfully unspectacular in comparison to New York City, and far too low rise. Especially since it has been given much more time to develop than New York.

What does that mean? The sky-scraper era has lasted just as long for everyone. Chicago had a jump of a few years on new York, if you want to be technical. There's more to a city than high-rises.
