Although Bloomberg and the FBI announced in 2002 that New York was the safest big city in America, the next year murders increased by a small amount and continue to increase this year despite a decline in all other categories aside from larceny. Already in the Sixth Precinct (Greenwich Village) there have been two murders to date this year, whereas in all of 1993 when Compstat first came into use there was only one. Did New York's crime-fighting success end with the Giuliani administration, or is this a momentary setback due to the economy and other factors?

I was under the impression that the economy was improving in NYC..
Anyway, I wouldn't let the way crime has been over the last couple months reflect the way 2004 as a whole will be. I think that if that if things were getting bad, we would see an increase in smaller crimes before a yearly increase in murders.

I don't know. I think that if the economy gets a lot better and the city gets the money it needs, crime will definitely either stay the same or go down. But the economy is a totally unpredicatble thing.

Under Bloomberg, Crime Falls Again (http://forums.wirednewyork.com/viewtopic.php?t=267)
Polls like this one are worthless. All you can do is extrapolate from your experience and news coverage (which happens to be positive overall). Or have the wisdom to answer, "I don't know."

It has been suggested that lowering crime rates and abortion are linked. I'm not convinced but its interesting either way
