My first impression from the NY Auto Show was just how retro many of the cars looked- there were many many unabashed references to the fifties. That aside, the American cars far outshone their European and Asian rivals, and I really think it is one of those good innovative carefree times for American car design. Here is what I found.......

I just got back from the show a little while ago. I'm still a little too worn out to go into great detail.

A few impressions:

The new BMW's are hideous-looking. Did they hire an American designer?

I was really impressed by the new Toyota Prius. It's just a really slick car. And it gets 60 mpg.

As for this:

the American cars far outshone their European and Asian rivals
While the designs of the American concepts were certainly more exciting, the American production cars still, for the most part, seem chintzier and less refined than the solidly engineered European and Japanese models. Say what you will, I just can't get past poor fit-and-finish, cheap materials, and careless/sloppy design and engineering.

A genuine question or sarcasm, because.....

Are the Porsches still locked?

Sarcasm, yes, you caught me...

Yes, the Porsches were locked...

yes, Stockton, you're right on both counts. The BMW's were truly hideous. Whatever's gone wrong? And, I've had some time to reflect that American car design is not having the renaissance that I thought whilst I was still drunk from the show. cheers t
