I would like to announce Wired New York Webcam (http://www.wirednewyork.com/webcam/). I spent several hours last night trying to make it work, and it seems operational, in time for arrival of Queen Mary 2.

The webcam is working today, but I am not sure what will happen tomorrow, enjoy it while it's operational.

The picture, http://www.wirednewyork.com/webcam/wirednewyork.jpg is updated every 10 seconds, and, correspondingly, the Webcam page (http://www.wirednewyork.com/webcam/) is reloaded every 10 seconds using Javascript.

If you experience any problems viewing the webcam, post it here.

Here the image taken at 7:40 am this morning. Image quality is not very high, so it's hard to appreciate the size of the ship :( The red streaks come from the webcam, unfortunately.

After a day of broadcasting, the following changes will improve the viewing experience in my opinion. I am increasing the size of the picture from 320x240 to 640x480, but reducing the refresh rate to 1 frame per minute.

I have created an animation from the output of the webcam, 12 frames taken 1 minute apart, but showing it in 12 seconds. It shows Queen Mary 2 leaving New York on a one-day trip. The file is in Macromedia Flash format.

Hey, I thought it was updating every 10 seconds...
When I checked on the cam, it was updating only once each minute. No big deal, though. Still very cool.

I have installed a new webcam insted of the old one. Picture quality is now better, and I have changed the refresh rate to every 30 sec. Here is the current picture:

Too bad you don't live in the downtown :) - I like the views of that area the most. And there aren't much webcams in that area today  Can you set the webcam to look south or north? I think that the south and north areas of Manhattan are more interesting than the rivers.

Wow, Theatre District front row balcony seats to the Hearst show! The camera angle shows the amazing development along the Eighth and Ninth Avenue corridors. In the daytime, I think I saw the new Alvin Ailey dance theatre (far left view). One could call this a "hawk's eye" view.

Nice composition! TY!

Although, you may be able to compress it a bit. I don't know how many frames you have there, but since the webcam fidelity and color is not the greatest, some optimization may be able to be used to reduce the size.....

Comelade
August 4th, 2005, 09:19 AM
optimization does not bring large thing, and one does not lose badly in the colors. I use already GIF Optimizer, the problem it is that the passage of JPG in GIF makes lose quality

Comelade
August 4th, 2005, 09:34 AM
there are 272 frames

I prepare same animation but with the webcam Wired 3, but with less frame

Why is Webcam 3 stuck in a time warp?
I've been checking it this afternoon and night and it continues to give me an old picture from Nov 1, 2005 at 11:25.34

I find the web cams (particularly #3) to be a real pleasure. I am glad #3 has been directed toward both the waters surface and the cityscape: I am often on the look-out for fellow kayakers. it is rare when I spot them, but good fun when I do.

Also, If anyone out there ever gets a screenshot (i am not sure yet how to do that:the screen shot) of a kayaker - please post for me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry everyone. We moved out of the old apt on May 1 and obviously took the computer and wireless system out with us. Then we were busy rearranging the new apt., then out of town on vacation.

Edward came by Friday night and set it up in the new location. The view is basically the same except that now we have PSE&G power lines in the way. Not much we can do about that unfortunately.

Also the webcam now catches from 34th to 59th when in the old location it only got 42nd to 59th. Not sure why that was either. If you want to watch the fireworks tomorrow you better get here early! Best John

Ed, on Cam2, you may want to find some way of shielding the lens or something so that you do not get so much ambient reflection from the interior during the day (I think I see a clock reflected in the window...)

Don't know if that is easily done or not, just a suggestion.

The noise in the image seems to be the same in every frame. Wouldn't it be easy to use a black image (cover the lens) to filter it out?

EDIT: I mean the noise pixels in Camera 1 do not change frame to frame and therefore are easy to correct (if this ever was unclear). In good light the image is absolutely brilliant! Too bad the refresh rate is so low.

I looked at them. Because the planes are moving the lights on the wings & fuselage are blurred --hence the bracelet effect.
