Nice pictures! One comment I sometimes hear from tourists who have visited the Empire State Building's observation deck is that, unexpectedly, a flurry of roof activity throughout the city can be seen from there.

Nice photos, But the only thing I don't like about roof tops is that someone may close and lock the door on me and there will be no way for me to get back inside. Short of having a cell phone to call for help, I would have to jump off the roof, but my bones may not like it.

Have a nice day all.

Anyone have recent pictures of people on their roofs after the nice weather NYC has been having?

Not residential, but still roofs.

Can someone identify where this is, please (I know it'll be obvious once I know).

Thanks for the link, Benniest.

^Looking south down 8th Avenue from West 21st Street. The highest crane in the distance (center) is atop the infamous Trump Soho. The patch of green where 8th Avenue vanishes into the background is Abington Square, visible just to the left of the huge former Port Authority Building.

Thanks very much for the info, MK. Mmm, maybe not so obvious, though (to me). I wouldn't have picked it. I was trying to work out what that tall building on the left is as a reference point.

Take a look at my first blog post using the new Wired New York Wordpress platform - Sunbathing on the Roofs of New York (http://wirednewyork.com/2009/08/sunbathing-roofs-of-new-york/).

You can make comments - just as you expect from a blog - although it's a different membership system from the forum.

These are some great pictures! I have to say though some of the roofs are pretty ugly...and some are really nice when they have gardens that are well taken care of. Come to think about it, "As above, so below"...

Those last two are sheer art. They convey a gritty sense of badassery that NYC has lost in recent decades due to "Disneyfication".

Those shots are The Warrior's New York.

It would be a badass project for a residential roof addition to evoke our water towers (rather than mobile homes).

Almost what I had in mind. Imagine seeing these lit up drums throughout the skyline.

Crossing 14th St walking up 8th Avenue has to be the most jarring introduction to the street grid. I always wish for the village to continue north a little more.

New York secret rooftop world: Amazing aerial shots give you a view of city's skyline as you've never seen it before

This incredible collection of aerial photographs taken above New York gives a rare glimpse of a hidden rooftop world. Just a few stories above the non-stop hubbub of city life exists an incredible oasis of lush gardens, restaurants, swimming pools and even tennis courts.

Thanks to Mayor Bloomberg's eco-friendly 'roofscaping' initiatives, the tops of dozens of buildings have been transformed into amazing outdoor living spaces and models for green-city living.

Stained-Glass Watertower is Ablaze Atop a Dumbo Warehouse

by Jessica Dailey

(click photos to enlarge)

http://ny.curbed.com/uploads/Watertower-Robert-Banat2a-thumb.jpg (http://ny.curbed.com/uploads/Watertower-Robert-Banat2a.jpg)

Dumbo is now home to the city's fanciest (albeit, fake) watertower. Last night, artist Tom Fruin flipped the switch on his latest installation (http://ny.curbed.com/archives/2012/06/04/colorful_kaleidoscopic_water_tower_to_light_up_dum bo_skyline.php), a replica of the iconic New York rooftop structure made from 1000 pieces of salvaged plexiglass. Fruin collected the colorful pieces from all over NYC (http://www.tomfruin.com/watertower.html), "from the floors of Chinatown sign shops to the closed Dumbo studio of artist Dennis Oppenheim to Astoria’s demolition salvage warehouse Build It Green!NYC." For the next year, the kaleidescopic watertower will be illuminated every day at dusk, giving the Dumbo skyline a nightly light show from the roof of 20 Jay Street.

The Water Tank Project

(see article (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/734752095/the-water-tank-project) for a video and more details)

http://s3.amazonaws.com/ksr/projects/56719/photo-full.jpg?1338928083

For the first time in history, New York City’s iconic water tanks will be used as canvases for public art. Twelve feet high, thirteen feet in diameter, made mostly of redwood, water tanks can be seen from almost every corner of the City.

With the support of the City of New York, we present The Water Tank Project (http://www.thewatertankproject.org) (TWTP). For twelve weeks during Summer 2013, TWTP will transform the skyline by converting water tanks across all five boroughs into works of art on the subject of water. Artists participating in TWTP will donate original works of art, which we will scan and print on vinyl material that will be installed on carefully selected tanks. These artist-designed tanks will spark a global dialogue about the future of one of our most precious and endangered resources: WATER.

Public art takes place outside museum and gallery walls. It is free, open 24 hours a day, and accessible to everyone. Kickstarter allows us the opportunity to realize our dream of funding this landmark public art event by the same community it serves: you the people!
