The green goblin, 2 Broadway sure hurt the downtown skyline by blocking all those graceful towers.

Wow! All that snow provides a wonderful counterpoint to the beauty of all those old buildings.

Recently I've been reading quite a bit about the history of the infamous "Five Points" neighborhood of the city and can't help but wish for more actual photos of the area from the mid 19th century.

Some of these pictures have likely been posted before but always deserve a fresh bump. Taken by Jacob Riis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacob_riis) in the 1890s there are some really interesting glimpses of this area of old NYC.

17832

Mulberry Bend (Mulberry St, 1896). Looking north, Columbus Park is now on the left side of the street at this angle.

17833

"Bandit's Roost" (Off Mulberry St, 1890). Demolished a few years after this picture was taken.

10 Gritty Vintage Photos That Capture 1940s New York City

One of New York City's most beloved street photographers passed away (http://thevillager.com/2014/08/21/l-e-s-lenswoman-rebecca-lepkoff-dies-at-age-98/) last week at the age of 98. Rebecca Lepkoff, as the story goes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebecca_Lepkoff), first got into photography after she worked as a dancer at the 1939 World's Fair, using her earnings to buy a second-hand camera. From her home on the Lower East Side, she chronicled its changes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7p5NnkxZM_Y) via images of children playing, industrial activity at the waterfront, everyday commuters on the El, billboards at movie houses, and more. Her passion was the "urban choreography, rapid movement, and spontaneity of New York's bustling streets," according to Tablet's obituary (http://www.tabletmag.com/scroll/182937/remembering-photographer-rebecca-lepkoff#undefined), and she was able to document the "thrumming commotion of New York at a time when the theater of daily, blue-collar life took place not in the small, cramped tenement dwellings but on the sidewalks, stoops, docks, fire escapes, storefronts, and rooftops."

^ Interesting. Hats flying and skirts lifting :).

Apart from the first track, shame about the choice of music. That version of Amazing Grace was awful .

I suppose it's only fitting that most of the 5 points were stamped out by the largest complex of court houses in the United States

Brilliant. Good choice of music, too. Thanks for posting SM :).

Not too many of the veteran regulars hanging around here these days, especially after Zippy disappeared :(.
