A glass house on B'klyn roof

Drawing of building addition resembling nearby bridge.

Alongside the Manhattan Bridge, so close that drivers can see the whites of construction workers' eyes, a glass house is rising.

The three-story structure on the roof of the brick Dumbo building is framed by steel beams that resemble the towers of the nearby bridge - a deliberate choice on the part of the soon-to-be tenants.

Scarano & Associates is building itself an office addition at 110 York St. that's meant to showcase the architecture firm's design prowess. People are already coining nicknames for the eye-catching structure - one of the contractors calls it "that thing from the Jetsons."

When Robert Scarano rented the top floor of the existing building, he knew it was too small. But he needed an office in a hurry - the Fort Greene property that housed his firm had been destroyed by fire.

There was no other available space at 110 York, so the landlord said a rooftop addition would be okay - if Scarano would do the work.

When the glass house is finished in September, there will be room to hire 20 people, which will swell Scarano's staff roster to 75.
