There is a piece of legislation in Congress right now called the INDUCE Act. The bottom line is that this bill is trying to legislate away the rights provided by an earlier 1980s court decision called "Sony vs. Universal", that ruled that people had the right to own VCRs, cassette decks, and other devices that allow people to record media, even if some of the media may be copyrighted, because not all uses are copyright infringement.

This bill, attempting to slide in under the radar, would essential undermined that ruling. It is being bankrolled by lobbyist from Hollywood who fear technologies like Tivo and computer software that allows the file sharing of movies (these would both instantly be rendered illegal).

Unfortunately the group that is fighting against this legislation has chosen to call their group, "Save Betamax", because in legal circles, the 80s court decision is referred to as the "Betamax Decision". I think it is a stupid move to call it Save Betamax, but that's just my opinion.

This website below has more information, and is requesting that people participate in a call in to Senators. You submit your e-mail address, and best time of day you're available to call a Senator, then they send you an e-mail telling you when to call, so that the Senator's office has a steady stream of calls all week long leading up to the vote.
