Downtown Arena Design Team wins downtown project

By DAN MARGOLIES The Kansas City Star

A consortium of local architects was selected this afternoon to design Kansas City's proposed arena.

Kansas City Mayor Kay Barnes and City Manager Wayne Cauthen announced the selection at around 3 p.m., shortly after the city-appointed Architect Selection Committee interviewed the two teams competing to design the $250 million project.

The city hopes to select a building contractor before Thanksgiving. Barnes and Cauthen provided no further details because they said negotiations with the architectural team were ongoing.

The selection of the Downtown Arena Design Team was a huge victory for the consortium, which consists of firms with major offices in Kansas City. The firms are HOK Sport+Venue+Event, Ellerbe Becket, 360 Architecture and Rafael Architects. The four firms collectively have designed 25 of the last 28 NBA and NHL arenas in the country.

The other team bidding for the project was comprised of world renowned Los Angeles architect Frank Gehry and Crawford Architects, a firm with offices in Kansas City and Australia.
