Forget Manhattan. There is nothing available at that price. The only way you can live in Manhattan is by sharing an apartment. Same goes for the expensive parts of Brooklyn.

In Brooklyn, you should be able to get a small apartment in a South Brooklyn neighborhood for under $800. It will probably be a basement apartment in a private house, or perhaps a subdivided 2 or 3 family house. You might also get lucky and find a real studio in an apartment building.

I would look in the following neighborhoods: Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Gravesend, Bath Beach, Brighton Beach, Sheepshead Bay, Ocean Parkway, Marine Park. All these neighborhoods are safe and friendly, and have good subway or bus access.

Craig's List is the best website for NY apartments.

I just did a search, you should have no problem finding something in your price range.
