Are Hostels Safe to Stay in?

Might be going to NYC and with the stupid hotel prices, im looking for some cheap hostel prices. But i was wondering how safe are hostels to stay in and you have to share beds with numerous, is it difficult to get used to that?

Anyone have any background experience?

Also whats the best hostel which is located in a good part of nyc and is cheap.
