I'm absolutely certain there was a thread on this but the search turned up nothing.

There are also better renderings around, some of which were in that thread. Architect is SOM.

SOM NY is returning to its modernist convictions, first initiated under Burnshaft, and while the forms aren't particularly exciting the facades are:

Some update news finally...

http://newyork.construction.com/images/2006/May06HigherEd-CUNY-59thSt.jpg

For example, a new 600,000-sq.-ft. building planned at 11th Avenue and 59th Street in Manhattan for John Jay College of Criminal Justice specifically targets overcrowding in the rapidly expanding academic program.

"Even with the new building, John Jay will have one of the lowest square-foot-to-student ratios in the system," Moore-Wilk said.

The $457 million North Hall project will include a 14-story tower clad in a glass curtain wall. A low-rise structure with a landscaped outdoor area on its roof will link the tower to John Jay's existing Haaren Hall.

The project was slated to begin earlier this year, but legal issues have delayed demolition at the site. A major stumbling point is a pending agreement with Amtrak, the passenger rail carrier, to ensure proper ventilation of a rail tunnel running beneath the site.

Can't wait for this to go up. The existing garage is an eyesore, and I'm always happy when otherwise useless land (like that small section of open track at the corner of 58th (?) and WEA) is finally built on.

Some update news finally...

The garage is about to begin demolition! I walk there today and notice scaffolding going up and demolition signs.

Will this be located on Amsterdam? If so, on what cross-street?

No... this is fronting West End Avenue. Between 58th street and 59th street.

here is that garage that is getting demolished.

Here is a bigger rendering... (Notice that they made 10 West End Avenue (http://www.wirednewyork.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8556&highlight=element) into a pedestrian plaza)

Here's the correct Radii Inc. link for this project:

Maybe a moderator can put Derek2k3's 101 Warren link in the appropriate thread.

The slope of the street really makes this an interesting site. I like the way this design handles it.

Does anyone know when the construction of the college will be completed? I agree....the building looks pretty good.

Will this building be located directly behind the beautiful John Jay structure on Amsterdam? Also, John Jay occupies a POS structure on the east side of Amsterdam diagonally across from the nice one. Does anyone know if that will be razed and sold to a developer once the new building has been completed?

PS: Is the new building already UC?

^^ Construction has started - you can best see if from 11th Ave, between 58th & 59th street. The new building is directly behind Haaren Hall, which is the nice one you mentioned

Thanks for the info. Do you know anything about the POS that John Jay occupies on the east side of Amsterdam diagonally across from its nice, old structure. E.g., will it be razed and sold to a developer once the new building has been completed?

^^ I'm actually not sure about that one. I think that you are refering to North Hall, which was built in the early 70s by John Jay.

I don't know a lot of about John Jay, or other Cuny schools, but I'm under the impression that John Jay has doubled or tripled in enrollment since the mid 80s, which may mean that the POS is an integral part of their campus (as well as a total eye sore)

North Hall will come down and probably be sold to a developer.

^ A little bit of both I would guess.

North Hall will come down and probably be sold to a developer. That makes lots of sense both logistically and financially.

After this new building goes up, they'd move over there and sell NH.

Let's hope that happens 'cause like LL said, NH is really a piece of #&$@.

They're still digging around the foundation here ... as seen from the raised plaza across W. 58th ...

North Hall is owned by The New York State Dormitory Authority. John Jay will probably try to work with them for a renovation once the new project is complete (which by the looks of things won't be until well into 2010).
