Despite all the improvements and positives, NYC continues to hemmorage people(I believe the popualtion thread says 150K last year). Why is NYC losing so many people? Is it Schools? Crime? Economy? Who's moving out? Families? Middle-class? White flight?

Any suggestions on how we could change this trend? I mean, NY may have lots of immigrants, but with improving global economies and anti-immigrant setiment here, that might not last for too long. So is there a way to attract families from the US here and to hold on to the people we have? All suggestions would help...

BTW, I'm really trying to generate a serious converstaion here. Please don't treat this thread as hyperbole and delete it. If I knew another more approprate place to put this, I would put there (as long as it would see the light of day (ie: not the metro section)).

NYC population is going up. It was about 8,008,000 in the 2000 census, every year they give a rough estimate on change, now it's 8,110,000, something like that.

With all the construction going on, there's no way population is going down. I'm talking about the building on empty lots and abandoned buildings in E NY, Brownsville, South Bronx, Morisania, LES, Harlem, and the continued suburbanization of SI. And the condos going up in nearly every neighborhood. 6 families where 1 used to be, that's what I'm seeing here (although we have now zoned out these buildings, thankfully)

Please prove where NYC's population is going down?

It's still growing rapidly. However, that's all immigration from other countries. While I absolutely love immigration and it's benefits, it's not a never-ending stream. 1) more immigrants are moving to the rural states instead of NY 2) the global economy is improving, reducing poverty that drives the migration to the US and NY and 3) Many Americans are against immigration, this could lead to our borders being tightened

Any or all of these forces could severly hamper the flow of immigration into NYC. Knowing how DC hates NY, they would love to see this happen. So with that said, how do we stem the tide of people leaving NYC? I mean, it's essential that NYC has a healthy base of children and future residents, or we will become another Detroit. I mean, does anyone from the US ever move to NY? Or is it basically all outward to the south and west?

This thread is about finding out why people move out at such a huge rate. I know that people will always move out, but not at such a staggering rate. We should try to make the city appeal more to natives as well as families in CA,TX,The south,Midwest who are looking for places to relocate and raise a family. Domestic in-migration is the ultimate sign of a healthy city. NY is an extremely healthy city, but if the city we're to become a magnet for US citizens as well as world citizens, then we'd be in business.

In the end, it's all about making NYC a better place for everyone to live. No matter where you're from:)
