Here are some scans of proposals that didn't quite make the final cut of 7 for the WTC design competition.

I remember some of those from the Max Protech Gallery. I didn't like them then, and I don't like them now. Could you post the 7 "finalists" in the competition that gave us Libeskind?

All these are worse looking than the now defunct "freedom tower"....

I like MG New York's design. Seems like a modern rendition of the twins.

I dont even think the freedom tower looks good, but then again neither did the trade towers.
I disagree. The Twins were stunning and supernatural, there presence not only made New York, but they stood guard over the city as both instantly recognizable and all encompassing. I’ve compared the twins to a natural presence, where cities are built around, and comfort is found by it.

I like the Dattner & Partners design too. Simply put I liked the old towers the best. The other designs look downright ridiculous.

Stern, you've described in such poetic words the essence of the Twin Towers. Your comparison to a natural presence evoked images of a recent trip to Rio de Janeiro, where the Pao de Azucar and Corcovado are 2 geologic formations that tower over the city and can be seen from everywhere, a great source of pride and identity for "Cariocas".
The Twins were no less a source of pride for us New Yorkers. They were the first thing we'd notice when returning on flights from abroad,
and how many of us can deny that feeling of great pride (and comfort!) at the sight. That timeless archetype- of two sentinels keeping guard- is precisely the reason that I have always insisted whatever gets built there should retain that basic theme- of Twins towering above all else. Updated, 21st century versions, but definitely twins. I will be relieved if the redesign is better than the current "Freedom Tower" design, but ultimately I will be sad at what we lost, and amazed that people couldn't see the importance of replacing it.

I think the World Trade Center's twin towers were no less symbols of and landmarks in our City than the Empire State Building is. They were buildings that were so massive that they inspired awe when looked upon and could be seen from miles away just like the Empire State Building.

WTC rejects is right. And this is just scratching the surface.
Its amazing to think that 10 years from now, we may look back on the current Freedom Tower design and think were they really gonna build that? Of course, that all depends on what we get now.

"Stunning and supernatural" indeed.
For me the twin tower design was at once modern and ancient. And from a distance, the surface became as solid and as beautiful as stone.
When ever I saw the twin towers I thought of this:

Jake, I tend to agree with you...That design was pretty cool looking..It put a new twist on what used to be there...
