Before there was even a WTC, the land that it would occupy had a district filled with radio and tv stores up until their demolition. If you walked around the area during the post WW II period, you would have been overwhelmed with this area.

Yeah, I've always wondered how Lower Manhattan would be today if there was no WTC. I know that American International would not be Downtown's tallest building, and I know that BPC or somthing similar would probably have still been built, since the idea of creating a suburban-like neighborhood out of landfill was first conceived in the 1950's, except for the East River side of Lower Manhattan. What I don't know is whether or not Lower Manhattan would have been revitalized economically. There wouldn't have been enough office space for the area when the economy began heating up in the '80s and '90s, and I'm not sure if the WFC would have been built. However, it's possible that Tribeca could have extended into Liberty or Ceder St. since from the looks of it, a lot of those Radio Row buildings could have been converted into residential lofts. The radio stores would have been replaced with Cafes and Bistros.
