That's right. That fort was initially built by George Washington. The buildings inside the court are Greek Revival officers' quarters built 1820. I recommend a visit.

These are the images that Manhattan is famous for, mixed with some surprises.

Wonderful set of photographs, Ablarc - were they all taken on the same day?

Thanks, guys.

Uptown: early May 2005, all on same day; Downtown and Midtown: mid- June 2005, also all one day.

Not to demonstrate blasphemy against The Concrete Jungle, but this was my favorite shot. It makes me want to go frolicking through an (organic) forest, lol. Wonderful shots overall - a great summation of everything that is Manhattan.

Ironically, it's much easier to find rustic solitude in mid-Manhattan than in the garden city paradise where I live --where everyone's allotted a little patch of green, and because of its fragmented configuration neither the possibility nor the inclination exists to enjoy it.

There's similar solitude to be had in Boston's Fenway, also Olmsted's work.

^ Living a couple blocks from the Fens, I know just what you're talking about. The stretch north of the Longwood medical area and south of the Longwood T stop, where the park is sunk down around the Muddy River, is especially removed and enjoyable.

You might, however, encounter an occasional weirdo; and some years ago there was a pack of mad dogs.

I love Governor's Island. My frist trip there must have been when I was in 2nd Grade. It was a class trip. They closed it down for a number of years but they have since opened back up I believe 2 or 3 years ago when the city started the Openhouseny.org (http://www.ohny.org/) program.

They have been batting around ideas of what to do with the island everything from an amusement park, university, and a sort of resort island filled with Bed and Breakfasts. The homes are large and beautiful...I love the island.

The pictures are awesome. Sort of a quiz for the New Yorker.

Mad dogs? Please explain.

And about the wierdos, they hang out in specific areas, which are easily avoidable. The only problem is you have to learn where those areas are through trial and error.

Mad dogs? Please explain.
Feral pets. They formed a pack and killed a child.
