New rental building replacing flea market

A rental building is going up in place of one of the last Sixth Avenue flea markets. Rose Associates and Alan Locker plan to build the 36-story building at 55 West 25th Street for about $205 million. The building is expected to have 407 units and 20 percent of those will be reserved for people with low incomes. more [Post]

PS: Isn't it amazing that this simple building will cost almost half of what a 115 story building designed by a superstar will cost in Chicago?

PPS: Let's hope that this building replaces one of the ugly lots actually on 6th and is not completely on a side street.

#55 is at 6th Ave. It's directly above the Vanguard bldg.

I didnt realise chicago is so much further down the scale than new york i always thought of them as close contenders. Also you can really see how little amount of skyscrapers it really has compared to new york in the calatrava building thread

Yes. Chicago has exciting buildings but New York offers endless vistas of towers, many of them prewar.

I was walking up 6th tonight, and the lot between 25th and 26th Streets on 6th is now boarded up. Bulldozers are tearing up the asphalt!

I walked by here today. It's amazing how quickly this huge lot is being excavated. There's an enormous hole in the ground already.
