Stern, what exactly is it about Family Guy that you hate versus the Simpsons that you love? Not to say they're identical, but they come from the same general pipeline as far as humor is concerned. I'll admit I'm on the verge of being sick of Family Guy since nearly every friend of mine has the DVDs, but I still think its brilliant and hilarious, like the Simpsons.
To respond to the topic:
Favorites -
-South Park
-CHiPs (so cheesy in the best of ways, but it's not on anymore...)
-anything on ESPN Classic
-anything on VH1 Classic
-Charlie Rose
-Newshour with Jim Lehrer - probably the best news on TV
-SportsCenter
-Three's Company
-Mr. Show (any fans out there???)
-anything from Nickelodeon back in the '90s, especially Kablam!
-Aqua Teen Hunger Force
-anything from Discovery, History, National Geographic
-Freaks and Geeks
Unfavrits-
-just about anything on MTV, VH1, Showtime, TLC, E!, Bravo, or any other channel that traffics mindless dreck and nothing else
-any reality TV
-any of those forensics-crime shows that are all over the Big Three
-the OC
-commercials - my 22 year old eyes can't keep pace with the hype and flashiness and screaming of 'em all
I've never been a big TV watcher and since I moved to Boston the TV almost never gets turned on. Now about the only thing I watch is baseball, which is invariably the Red Sox due to my location and lack of cable service to see any other games................

The new Simpsons, yes. I'm not a big fan of the recent and overly stupid Simpsons. Family Guy is stupid for the sake of being stupid there is no story, just a bunch of dumb humor. I was a fan of the original Simpsons where there was family values and a good story. Today, both shows seem to have no quams showing a scene in out of space when the story is about a kids first day in school, or something along those lines. I hope you see what Im getting at.

Yes, the newer Simpsons have been hit-or-miss. Too zany sometimes, too political at others, and there's a sense of serious weight to some episodes that seems totally out of character. I've only seen a couple of the new Family Guys and I wasn't bowled over. I'll agree with you that the plot (of FG) often does take a backseat to squeezing in as many rapid-fire one liners as possible and in general I detest dumb humor too (American Dad is pretty bad). But I think that's where the show exceeded - being able to pull off really fast or really drawn-out gags. And if I remember, they had some moralistic points to their stories too (like the best of the Simpsons). But to each his own.

I love The Simpsons and Family Guy. Definitely my favorite animated shows, possibly favorite shows overall. Seinfeld is also a favorite. I don't know if any of you have seen it, but Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO) is hilarious. It's like Seinfeld, except dirtier and no commercials. Larry David (the star and creator) is the same guy who co-created Seinfeld.
I've recently started watching CSI. I like Miami and Vegas, but not the New York version for some reason. I love Conan, although lately he's had a lot of re-runs. Daily Show is good sometimes, but I'm not one of those "everyday watchers." I watched Monk when it first came out but now it's just boring. Nip/Tuck wasn't bad either, but I haven't seen a new episode in at least a year. World Poker Tour is still fun to watch sometimes. I like poker a lot, and the commentators are just hilarious.
There really aren't too many good shows out there now. I have no idea who still watches reality shows. And I agree: American Dad sucks.
