It's not tall enough for that scrutiny.

Impressive. And no hyperventilating from any CB types that a tall building is so close to ESB?

Probably because there are mostly commercial buildings in the: so there are not many local residents losing a view, getting shadows, or any other 'parochial' issues of concern.

Pictures don't show how beautifully this crown is lit. I wish they'd illuminate 500 Fifth Ave and the Nelson Tower.

Nah, 400 Fifth is tiny compared to the ESB. Mind you, it does obstruct the view from a certain angle coming down on 5th, but this is a very different scenario than the massive tower in planning.

On a different note; $2,782 per ft² (median)

Seriously?! That's pretty crazy for a building in this area. I haven't seen the apartments myself, so maybe it's worth it, the Setai down in FiDi was pretty nice, but man. For that price, in a location not immediately close to Central Park, it better be awesome.

It looks like that photo was taken from Queens. I would like to walk there. Is it by the new residential section?

That's actually on the Manhattan side of the East River just north of East 16th Street (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=%22780+east+14th+street+new+york+ny%22&sll=40.728267,-73.975282&sspn=0.01161,0.017145&gl=us&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=780+E+14th+St,+New+York,+10009&ll=40.729194,-73.971591&spn=0.01161,0.017145&t=h&z=16&layer=c&cbll=40.73055,-73.972796&panoid=bEcj7gaZKIs2BZrPxL63og&cbp=12,12.08,,0,-7.28).

A narrow pathway connects the East River Park to Stuyvesant Cove Park.

Interesting as always and thank you Sir lofter. I did walk 'almost' up to that point when they opened the new promenade section but there were a lot of bikes swooshing by and I chickened out. :o

New Luxury Tower Tries to Lift Neighborhood

By CRAIG KARMIN

The developers of the Setai Fifth Avenue are attempting something next month that many say could be beyond the towering building's reach: selling a luxury property in a neighborhood filled with souvenir shops and takeout food...

Looking directly from Jersey, it fills in the low area between Midtown and ESB. :)

Definitely looks better up close where you can see the high quality details and materials. From afar looks very plain and boxy unfortunately. A great addition though.

Yep...I agree; up close it looks great, specially the materials and the crown.

From afar, the crown has very poor discernability from the rest of the building. It does look boxy indeed. It suffers from the same flaw as the Gerhy's DT tower: awful massing. At least this has a crown.

Still better than 85% of residentials....good building.

They turned the ground floor retail space into what seems like a guest-only cocktail lounge with screens preventing you from seeing in.

Totally deadened that corner now.

............ cocktail lounge with screens preventing you from seeing in.

In regards to 'seeing in' the lower street level interior. It seems there is not much of an opportunity for 'seeing out' either. (LOL)

This may be a photo (http://gothamist.com/2010/12/06/photos_ai_fiori_michael_whites.php?gallery0Pic=9#g allery) of the interior of "the lounge": there are 'frosted glass' windows with 'scrim type' shades along the sidewalk - which may be the screens of which you speak.

The Firm that Furnished and Installed the CROWN stainless steel Panels as well as the Stainless Steel Louvers at the Top of the Building ..is Jordan Panel Systems Corp.. they specialize in Building Exteriors for 35yrs in the NY metro area..www.jordanpanel.com

Seems kinda spammy. And I thought Zahner did this: http://www.azahner.com/portfolio/400-Fifth

........... And I thought Zahner did this: http://www.azahner.com/portfolio/400-Fifth

That Zahner website clearly indicates who did those crown panels. There are plenty photos from other projects for architecture fans to view on that site: thanks for posting.

"The Zepps process"
The ZEPPS™ Process is typically used to efficiently construct complex forms and surfaces, such as the undulating curvatures by Frank Gehry or Randall Stout, but 400 Fifth Avenue is one of the few projects where ZEPPS™ was used to construct a rectilinear form.
Using the ZEPPS™ Process eliminated three typical construction steps -- structural steel contractors, load bearing steel stud erectors, and finish surface contractors. Because of the way that these panels are pre-assembled, we reduced the potential danger for on-site workers by decreasing their time spent constructing it, lowering the amount of workers involved on the structure, and eliminating the need to have workers out on a swing-stage several hundred feet in the air.

excavation for the site immediately west of the setai is well underway. anyone know what is planned?

there are a couple other projects in progress on that block of 36th. a midblock hotel that looks like it has topped out around 25 stories and another site west of the hotel.
