Should divorce be outlawed in the USA? Some think that marriage is the glue that holds society together and that divorce is one of the steps towards oblivion.

Perhaps our legislators could enact a two-in-one bill: Proclaim Christianity as the official state religion and make marriage vows irreversible.

Congressman likens divorce, gay nuptials

EVANSVILLE – U.S. Rep. John Hostettler told a gathering of clergy that divorce is as dangerous to society as gay marriage and that churches are essential to strengthening families.

“The picture of marriage is the picture of Christian salvation,” Hostettler, R-Ind., said Tuesday. “Any diminishing of that notion – whether homosexual marriage or any other degradation of marriage – is something we must fight in public policy.”

Hostettler, who spoke to an Indiana Family Institute program at Crossroads Christian Church in Evansville, also said religious faith needs to have a greater presence in public policy decisions.

Hostettler, who is from Wadesville, has won a string of generally close elections in southwestern Indiana’s Eighth District since he first won his seat in 1994 with strong support from religious conservatives.

If we just outlawed marriage altogether, ALL of these arguments and divisions would go away.

Or, we could kill Pat Robertson for fun.

Out of sight, out of mind. The neocons think that banning things they don't like -- abortion, gay marriage, drugs, and now divorce -- actually ends the problem. Funny, but this is the same argument that they assault liberals with about gun control. Gays can just go back in the closet to lives of sham and misery, loveless marriages can continue in silence, rife with affairs, spouses and children can continue to live with an abusive family member(s) with no hope of escape, and the drug trade can just continue illegally. Sweep it under the rug.

Don't Republican-voting states lead the country in divorce rates? Aren't complications from botched illegal abortions the fourth-leading cause of maternal death in Brazil? And aren't heterosexuals and drug users the ones who started the AIDS epidemics in Russia and South Africa?

If anything, conservatism is more of a threat to the institution of marriage in this country than two guys making out with each other can ever be.

The way things are going, I'll never get to marry my rottweiler.
