Is it true? Are White Castle burgers really as good as some people say? I've heard people relocated from the north say that they practically live on them whenever they go back home to visit. I know they are in New York because there is a scene in Saturday Night Fever showing them cooking, which always makes me hungry.

The closest alternative I can imagine is the simple McDonald's cheeseburger. They sell White Castle burgers in the frozen section but I don't think they could possibly be the same.

A fast food restaurant. There's also a scene in American Splendor.

I think White Castle is pretty old. We certainly didn't have it on the west coast, but it seems to be pretty common in select urban areas east of the Mississippi.

Here's a run-down:

As far as I'm concerned, their food only tastes good if you are blitzed, and then it is delicious.

In NYC you can get a White Castle "burger" on 8th Ave @ 36th St.

The WC "burger" is pretty tasty, if you've had a lot to drink!

You can literally pop them down like M & M's.

Definitely an American classic that must be tried -- at least once.

There are several of them in NYC, I know the Bronx alone has about 10-15 of them.

Or the movie Harold and Kumar go to White Castle. What a waste of 90 min of my life that was.

There's not many in Brooklyn that I know of but I've seen plenty in the Bronx.

I completely forgot about the Harold and Kumar movie. Probably because it was so lame.

I agree with the people who say WC is best when you're compeltely obliterated. Those little tiny burgers are mighty tasty when you can barely stand up. Of course you'll pay for it the next day.

White Castles are fast disappearing from Manhattan. I know of the one on 36th and Eighth, and I think there is one on Fifth somewhere in the 30's, east side of the block if I remember correctly. I can think of at least two in the Bronx and a couple in B'klyn.

If you're looking for fast food in the city, you'd be better off eating at Ranch 1 Chicken. Their fries are excellent and the grilled chicken is better for you than a bag of WC burgers. WC burgers are small, you can't eat just one.

For when you're really loaded, try the Crave Case (30 steamy sliders):

And they even sell an air freshener for your car (vanilla, of course) ...

And it's only $1.95 !!!

There's a White Castle in Spanish Harlem, near 103rd Street, if I recall correctly.

Here's a link to whacked-out forum for "White Castle-aholic"s:

Here's a sample:

"Can you top this White Castle experience:

Ten years ago I was heading home after a hard days work. I passed my favorite White Castle store and consumed my usual sack of 7 White Castles. That night I woke up at 3:00 in the morning with stabbing chest pains- I thought I was having a heart attack. My wife drives me to the local hospital and in the emergency room I was diagnosed- cardiac arrest and sent to intensive care. They ran all kinds of tests on me and after three days determined that I did not have a heart attack but a gall bladder attack from those White Castles. I have since had my gall bladder removed and I am back enjoying White Castle."

That story is hard to beat.

However, I do have a friend who was arrested for dancing on top of a table in the White Castle on Queens Boulevard. You can imagine what sort of state he was in.

He remained in jail for two days and passed the New York State bar a day after his release.

Alright... can someone explain to me why you have to be drunk? Do they serve alcohol, or do people just go here once theyre drunk?

They don't serve alcohol, and you don't have to be drunk to eat there. In fact, you'll find it crowded with families and children during the day and you might not find a drunk in there at all. It's just one of those places that is fast, convenient and open late, so you'll find a lot of people there late at night after they've left the bars and clubs and have had a little too much to drink.

Yeah thats what I figured. I knew you didnt have to be drunk, I just thought everyone meant the food was so bad it helped to be drunk.

Yeah, that might be part of it too..or you'd have to be drunk to willingly eat something that bad for you
