Hi guys, need some usefull advice please. Due to arrive in NYC in May, and need to pick up a road legal car for under 250 dollars. OK OK stop laughing, this is serious, cos we're doin a road trip to the Big Easy (BABE2006).
So could you please let me know 250 dollars, is this realistic - in New York State?
and what are the legals on car ownership?

Cheers guys

Yes, I believe you can get a car for that price. But, I do not know the particulars on where to go, or the "legals", on how do go about it.

I can offer some useful advice on getting a good price on a used car. A friend of mine lives upstate NY, and he tells me that prices, for used cars up there are significantly less than the cost of an equivilant car in the NY Metro area.

Good luck.

You can buy a car for that amount, but what good is a car that its seller values at that price? The reason it costs so little is that it's worth little. You could make the case that the first repair will bump the car's cost to $600, the second to $1000, and the third to...

You should expect the first repair in the first week. This car will ruin your trip --and maybe even get you into a fatal accident.

Consider renting a car instead. Car rentals are cheap in the U.S., and you'll have a nice new car with no worries.

Insurance will cost you at least 5x that (if not a lot more); without insurance you run the risks of many problems should you be stopped for any infraction.

You're definitely not going to find anything for a road trip at that price. My boyfriend and I spent a weekend in the Catskills, about two hours away, and spent that amount.

Also, roadtripping to New Orleans is a really godawful idea. You've heard about that Hurricane Katrina thing, right?

Hi Guys
Back after a short break, trust you all had a great Xmas!!
Thanks for the advice thus far. Still searching 4 a car/pick up etc, for under 250 bucks, (May 2006) whooo, this is really easy 'NOT' still e-bay seems our best bet at the moment, and Craigs list is an excellent 2nd. But if anybody knows where I can pick up some wheels for 250 big uns please let me know. (Must be road legal). We know this is a big ask, but............
If we fail to procure a wagon, then well we're still comin over to take part in the 'BABERALLY'.
If your wondering what this is all about, check out; 'staples2naples' &
'BABERALLY' on the web to get a flavour of what we're about.
And please ask me any questions relating to the above.

Cheers

New Oreleans - poverty, hunger, devistation. And your doing a "roadtrip event" called baberally2006. Unless its about saving children from the devistation - I think not - this sounds like "rally" bad timing.

And then the car for no mony thing. Pardon the remark but your begining to sound more like "team Brain-Less" than anthing else. Sorry, Could not resist that one...... but I would like to hear what the "babe" part is about.

Cheers....to the mad dogs and englishmen on the other side of the pond.

check this out, and browse 'the link' for our european brother (staples2naples). Hopefully this will enlighten you to what its all about.
These type of events are growing in popular interest here in the UK. This years opening gambit (staples2naples) had over 25000 hits in the first day, so I guess we're not the only 'brain-less' team.
Maybe once you've you've looked, you may think, um, BABE rally could be for me, you never know!!!
thanks for the interest.

no problem. But you are correct in one sense, driving 1500 miles in a near wreck, does smell of madness, but it works, and just reading the 'Staples2Naples' forum has inspired many people to want to take part.
Everybody that does has a 100% full on time, but if you think these are slightly crazy check out 'mongolrally.co.uk' now this is mad, and yep you guessed, we're up for that one as well.
The BABERALLY is the first (we think) of its type in the States, so come along to see us off in May 2006, or maybe take time out - grab a car, and join in!!! you never know, could be life changing expirence:rolleyes:

Happy new year to you, and all that may be reading this.

I will not be able to do the rally (not this year anyway) but I do intend to take up on your offer to "come out" to see you off. Even if - as the song goes - the event is to be held in the heat of the "mid-day sun".

cheers
