Does anyone have any information about why the carousel was created or know anything about the first carousel the park had? Thanks.

Of the two designers of Central Park, Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted, Ohmsted saw the project as a civic work. He called the area of the park containing the zoo, dairy, chess & checkers pavillion, and the carousel, the Children's District.
Fresh milk was diffiicult to obtain at that time, and the Dairy, now a visitor center, was built to distribute fresh milk to families.
