The wait can be pretty long, and there's almost always a queue. You might be better off going to Rockfeller Center, since the observation deck at 30 Rock is open again and you can reserve your tickets online to avoid a wait. Plus, you can see the Empire State Building from it, which you can't see from the Empire State Building. That costs $14.

What time does it go dark in New York in December?

Around five o'clock, though on the winter solstice the sun sets around 4:30.

Is it safe to use the subway in Manhatten when it goes dark?

Yes. Just use common sense while riding: ride in the conductor's car or the most-crowded car, look like you know where you're going, wait a little while after the doors open at your stop before getting off if you think someone's following you.

How much does ice skating cost at the Rockerfella centre?

Eight dollars, though at the new rink in Bryant Park you can rent skates for free.

A while, considering that we're talking about walking around half the length of the island. It's certainly doable, though.
