Bullfrog: Could you recommend a nice town in Tunisia for a weeks vacation in Feb or March? I'm not interested in traveling around ...I just want to stay in one place... nice beach... Also: I don't drive so it must be easy to get around. Suggestions?

Yes, The south Of Tunisia , especially in March.
I recommend Tozeur, the city of Oasis. It's pretty warm and beautiful.

bullfrog, those are some f*cking awe---some photos!

Maybe in another thread (don't want to derail this one), you can tell us about "Real Life" there, from the eyes and heart of a citizen. Also, what should tourists expect, or not, when visiting.

"Real Life" ? :D

In an objective way ? :D

ok : Tunisia is not a wealthy country, but not a poor country too. Middle class is the majority of the people. An oriental country with great occidental influence.
People dress in Occidental way. They are open minded. Women are free to dress in sexy way. People , especially in the coastal tunisia, are used to Tourism. A tourist can travel by himself with no danger, but, he might be harrassed by people who want to sell Goods to him.

Tunisians are Muslims, but they have no interest in fanatism. Many peolpe from occident living in Tunisia for decades. Places like Hammamet, Carthage, Sousse....are places where a wealthy, liberal European Community live and have Villas and domaines.

Traditions are present in tunisia, but , especially in the touristic Eastern coast, Occidental influence is dominant.
People are free to drink wine, alcohol, to sell it. Sexual life is Liberal in tunisia, but not in public.Marriage is still dominant, but more and more Young people marry after the age of 30 and even 35.

The family is Important in a Tunisian life. A Paternal family, but with an active, working Mother with unpecedent rights in the muslim countries. In fact, the Tunisian woman is the most liberal in all the Muslim world.

Food is TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Delicious. I can't explain it, try it.
Our food is influenced by the middle-east, Italy, And jewish-Spanish community.

Wow. Nice to see smiling faces in pictures from a Muslim country. Doesn't look like anyone here would be interested in torching embassies over cartoons.

Wouldn't it be nice if the Muslim world's remainder took a cue from Tunisia?

Muslims in most places need to learn to have fun.
