Can someone give me the info on how to make a link look like this:
that thread (http://www.wirednewyork.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4299&page=6)
instead of like this:

Do it like this:
[url=
Then the link.
Then end bracket immediately following the url.
Then write "that thread" or whatever.
Then type /url in brackets.

You can also highlight text, then use this button to make it a link:

In the upper right corner of the reply box, there is an icon http://www.wirednewyork.com/forum/images/editor/switchmode.gif that switches between the editor modes. The simple text mode shows the codes, such as [url ] for formatting output. The graphical mode does not show the codes - you can use this button http://www.wirednewyork.com/forum/images/editor/createlink.gif to make a link.

The software used at another place where I read and post (AV Science Forum (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/index.php?)) idiot- (and code-) proofs this process. When the LINK button is clicked, this box appears:

And then this one:
