Hi all,
I'll be coming to NY next week for the 3rd time -and I'm so looking forward to-!
I thought about a day at Coney Island Beach but heard, that the area got bad the last years and that it might be unsecure to hang around there...
I got the tip that Manhattan Beach should be much more beautiful and more secure. What do you think?

Yes, Manhattan Beach is nicer - as a beach. It has trees around it and because one can only park at a paid parking lot, there are not as many people there. The beach itself is not as large as the one on Coney Island. People go to Coney Island because of it's exotic feel. You can also visit the bwach that is located between Manhattan Beach and Coney Island. I am talking about Brighton Beach. This is a Russian area of Brooklyn with many restaurants and shops with good russian food and there are several restaurants on a Boardwalk where you can eat, drink and then go to the beach. On Brighton Beach Avenue, you can buy all beach necessities - from cold drinks to beach towels. There's nothing except a hot dog stand on Manhattan Beach.

Lifeguards are not on duty at NYC beaches until Memorial Day weekend. Neither Coney Island nor Manhattan Beach will be crowded next week. Manhattan Beach is small, two bays, and located in an upscale residential neighborhood. I guess it is "safer" than Coney Island, but the Coney Island boardwalk is well patrolled by police.

I would not recommend Manhattan Beach until the summer, when there is lots of grilling in the surrounding park - unless you want solitude. For a visitor, there is much more to see and do at Coney and Brighton Beach (to the east).

Brighton Beach is nice, but you'll have much more fun at Coney Island.

Brighton Beach looks nice, but the water is filthy. So is Coney, but the neighborhood isn't good. West Brighton is nice.
