Can one take the Brooklyn Bridge from Manhattan and exit onto the BQE going towards Staten Island? I'm going to TN for two weeks and I need to know how to get my parents onto the expressway.

Yes. Just follow the signs to I-278 West

Why go through Brooklyn and SI?

Just take the Holland Tunnel from Manhattan over to NJ, then take I-78, then I-81, then I-40.

My 2 cents is to avoid the holland tunnel during Friday pm rush hour - I just relax and go to dinner rather than sitting in traffic...

ESPECIALLY on a summer weekend....

Lincoln is generally better, and GWB can also be good.

But I do recommend that you do not force yourself to cross a river more times than you need to. Take one of the Hudson River Crossings into NJ, grab the Turnpike (I-95) and go from there.

Or follow AN's directions. Either way, don't go further INTO the traffic swamp on your way out of it.

I agree about the lincoln tunnel - it's my primary escape route even though I live a minute from the williamsburg bridge. I think for NYY it would be more traffic to get to midtown than he's already going to be stuck in.

btw, Yankee if you're not leaving during rush hour by all means take the holland tunnel b/c it's so close to you
