I've lived in Marine Park all my life and I wanted to see more of Brooklyn. I'm going shopping for my first apartment, and I've got my heart set on Brooklyn Heights because it's on my subway line to work. Money is tight. I'd settle for a studio but I'd rather get a single bedroom. I'm patient, and I'm pretty good at finding deals (well, on electronics and clothes...), you think I can find a place for $1000/month?

Studio, 600 or less square feet in anything convenient. Less if it is nicer.
BH is one of the nicest, but most expensive parts of Brooklyn. I would check out Caroll Gardens, Cobble Hill and Park Slope as well.

So it's possible! Yeah, I know it's one of the most expensive. I know I'm making sacrifices.. $1000 in Sheepshead Bay and I could live in a mansion (relatively). I like those other neighborhoods you mentioned but I'm trying to stick along the 2/5 subway lines in case I have to sell my car. I think Cobble Hill may fall there but it's just as expensive as Brooklyn Heights. Carroll Gardens and Park Slope are too far away.

Although quite a while ago, I've lived in both Sheepshead Bay and Brooklyn Heights. You might need a car in Marine Park, but it would be a burden in Brooklyn Heights. Parking will be a pain in the ass.
You can rent a car as needed, and save yourself a lot of money.

^^ Speaking from experience - I have had a car in Brooklyn Heights for going on 6 years - and it is a huge pain in the ass - Alternate side parking takes place at 7am and 6 pm on the same day - So those of us that work later than 6pm are unable to move our cars back in time to avoid jummpy meter maids.
For your price range I would suggest looking south of Atlantic Ave, I work with some lawyers that take the 4/5 to work and walk to and from Borough Hall to homes south of atlantic. They say it is not a bad walk (I take the F to work so i would not know)

I'm pretty set on Brooklyn Heights, if I can't afford it I'll wait a year until I can. I don't want to settle for anywhere "near" Brooklyn Heights. I own a car right now but I'll probably park it at my parents house in Marine Park in case I need it, if I don't use it that much I might just sell it and save myself the hassle. I would never park it downtown, unless I could find a place with a driveway or garage... which I won't :)
I can't wait to start searching, I did a few searches on craigslist but haven't found anything in my price range yet. Anyone have any tips on finding a good deal?

I just don't get why you're set on Brooklyn Heights. It's geographically a very small neighborhood, and there are fewer and fewer rentals. I just think it's an exercise in futility when Cobble Hill, Boerum Hill, Carroll Gardens are effectively southern extensions of this area and are probably better suited to someone looking to rent...
I know someone who got a 3 bedroom on the Columbia St. waterfront for $2000. not too shabby.
