Article about the trend of HAPPY SLAPPING from London News:

"Imagine you are by the bus stop awaiting your bus home after a long, stressful day at work. Unbeknownst to you, a teenager is covertly filming you on their camera phone. Suddenly, a group of teenagers appear out of the blue and randomly slap you hard across the face before running off laughing and shouting. Completely shell shocked, in the few minutes it takes for you to recover and comprehend what just took place, the culprits are long gone.

This, the latest “fun” trend sweeping through London’s streets, is dubiously dubbed ‘Happy slaps’ or 'Happy slapping'. As the trend spreads like wildfire from school playgrounds to cities across the country, adults are now forced to rethink the way children are raised on a virtually unfiltered diet of video games, films, reality TV and lyrics about pimps, hoes and ghetto bravado.

'Happy slaps' has been around roughly for the past 18 months and is proving to be irresistibly popular amongst secondary school kids and college students. Upon first inspection, the video clips are highly amusing, much like MTV’s Jackass or Sanchez. However, when you place yourself in the victim’s shoes the fun factor dissipates. The mere idea of riding public transport and suddenly being happy slapped by a bunch of strangers brings about a sense of terror and fear. To add further distress to a bad scenario, much to the chagrin of the victims, the film clips are passed on via mobile phone before reaching a global audience online.

Many adult orientated forums are riddled with fervent discussions about the legality, morality and ready acceptance of this trend. However, amongst the youth of London, the debate is focussing more on what would they do if it happened to them. The prevalent response appears to be that ‘if you just take it and don’t defend yourself – you deserve it’.

Some schools in London have banned mobile phones in schools, and other schools across the city are now contemplating whether to follow suit. However, the reality is that the concept of ‘Happy slapping’ has evolved from school break prank to serious assault around town.

One of the most recent clips online involves 2 grown men repeatedly being slapped and kicked across the heads and backs, resulting in one of the men stumbling and falling to the ground after a particularly vicious kick to the face, leaving the viewer to wonder if he was left alone or beaten further.

The happy slaps phenomenon is a morally muddled minefield with a clear and sharp divide between those who think it is funny and those who disapprove. A leading community activist said: “It is nonsensical for this to happen to innocent people. It is not okay to do this”. He further asserted, “There is nothing happy about being randomly assaulted for no apparent reason. Amidst the gales of laughter, it must be remembered that ‘happy slaps’ can lead up to a five year prison sentence for assault or actual bodily harm”.

Creepy. Have a nice day in *with heavy Michael Caine accent* "LON-DON TOWN".

G.K.T.

Time to respond with some happy hair grabbing and smashing their punkin heads against the kiosk. Won't that make a cute video?

No, I'm a would-be 'out and proud' hair grabbing, punkin head smashing type, that is, if I were ever happy slapped. One of the advantages of being 6'6"!

Agree. So it's a wonder why there's so much fear of teenagers in the UK doing this.

Just a guess, they're hunting in packs, and they probably go after meek looking types that have their hands full. You might remember years ago, we had packs of teenage girls that were stabbing women with the backs of oversized slogan pins. The city made the oversized pins illegal and I'm sure the girls moved on to other things...

Never heard of this. I'm thinking the article was supposed to be some sort of practical joke. Still it gives good old Greggy something to be shocked about - us Limeys eh Greg?

It's not much of a joke for the people involved.

Are the newspapers merely addicted to such stories or is there a real problem?

London's teenage toll: Teenagers murdered in London in the past 11 weeks

1. January 25: Jevon Henry, 18, died after being stabbed in the heart in St John's Wood, north-west London. People are later arrested and bailed but no one has been charged.
2. February 3: James Andre Smartt-Ford, 16, of New Malden in Surrey, was shot at least twice at Streatham Ice Arena in front of hundreds of people attending an ice rink disco.
3. February 6: Michael Dosunmu, 15, of Diamond Street, Peckham, was shot by gunmen who broke into his home. Police think it was a case of mistaken identity. Five people are on bail pending further inquiries.
4. February 14: The son of an English builder and a Thai mother, Billy Cox, 15, was murdered at his home in Kennington, south London, in the afternoon. He was shot in the chest and was found dying by his sister.
5. March 14: Kodjo Yenga, 16, was stabbed to death in Hammersmith Grove, west London.
6. March 17: Adam Regis, the 15-year-old nephew of Olympic sprinter John Regis, died of a single stab wound to the chest in Plaistow, east London, as he travelled home from the cinema.

It's also not much of a joke the way you seem to triumph in London murders as evidence for your bizarre theories on Britain as a great bastion of corruption and decay. I live reasonably near the areas affected by these murders in south west London and have never been affected by crime - apart from the car being broke into five years back. There are problems of urban decay in inner city London which should not be shyed away from but the media does tend to catch hold of stories and make them out into something more.

As I'm sure Nick Taylor would rush to tell you, there are less murders in London than New York!

The police response would be swift and certain.

BenL, no triumph over murders here sir, just a question about the media coverage on the front page of the guardian website.

Ah yes, to this day I can wear a pierced earring in my back.

What a nitwit piece of city legislation. Hello, knitting needles!
