I wont be returning to New York. I changed my major to pre-med and I wanted to go to a more traditional type of school than Pace. Pace is a commuter school, so the friends I made arnt around very often. I also want to have a sprawling campus with sports. I dont even really feel like I went to college at Pace. NY was fun this year, and it has really changed my attitude on life and issues concerning it. I'll take these new ideas and feelings with me where ever I end up. Who knows, maybe Ill come back to the city one day, I never know. I applied to Middle Tennessee State located just outside Nashville, so Im sure Ill have plenty to do. Thanks for the advice about NY and the great conversation. I wont be returning to this site after this thread. I simply have too much to do. Thanks again guys and good luck!

I'm sorry to hear that. Hopefully once you graduate med-school you'll come back to NYC, like a fish to water.

^ This place can be like an addiction so perhaps it's best to kick it cold turkey.

Well, this goodbye was short lived. After touring Middle Tennessee I found out I didnt like it. So, I will be returning to Pace this fall. I'm applying to University of Florida and University of Miami for the spring semester. I'm hoping to get out then. After spending a summer back in Tennessee, and enjoying every minute of it, I think I'll be able to handle NYC for one more semester. haha

If you didn't like Middle Tennessee, I don't think you'll like Gainesville, either. Miami could be a good fit. What areas are you looking to study, and what are you looking for in a school these days? Big or small? Urban or secluded? Public or private? I might be able to offer you some good suggestions.

Alright, after waiting forever to decide to come back to NYC I had to take the last option with housing. I had to go through a student housing service in NYC, Pace dorms were full. Alas, even with this housing company I had to take their last option. Now, before I ask this, if your going to reply with "If you're scared to live there, you don't need to be in NYC", "This is an ignorant comment by an uneducated person", "This neighborhood is safe as ever, NYC crime is down blah blah blah" etc. I don't want to hear it. I want to hear useful information about this neighborhood. My building is located on 131st street and St Nicholas Avenue in Harlem. The only time I've been to Harlem is with my black friend on 125th. I'm white from a southern town, where I rarely see a single black person. So, Im somewhat nervous, J.B.'s sad death does not help. So, anyone can provide me with tips, info on the area I would appreciate it.

No late nights by yourself, and no treating people like they were someone different.

If I were you I would try my betst to mingle. The BEST way to do that is to hang out and LISTEN to the people around you. You open your mouth and you might just say the wrong thing.

If you go around and feel like you are a "foreigner" in a strange land, then people will read that pretty clearly and treat you as such.

I have sensed a bit of the seperation myself walking through there, makes me uneasy, but I do not think it will be any problem unless you make it one.

The classic "Hell up in Harlem" days are long over!

I enjoy myself when I party, drink or dine up in Harlem! Plenty of things to do....One Two Five (125th Street...shops, shops, shops!), Lennox Lounge, Perks (you'll have fun in that spot!). Nothing to be nervous about!

There's a rule I follow when going into other people's domain.....don't start none, won't be none! And another thing.....everyone from Harlem ain't looking to rob, and I don't think everyone from your town is a John Rocker! Throw all misconceptions outta ya head!

And take advantage of any/every neighborhood opportunity (housing, commerce, education, culture, etc). Best wishes to you! Peace.

Do you think I'd feel better if I brought my car to the city? Lets not think about cost, traffic etc. Do you think I'd feel more comfortable having it rather than relying on calling car services?
