Work starts on Dubai landmark
World’s tallest tower to feature a 90 degree twist
http://www.worldarchitecturenews.com/project/uploaded_files/293_infinity.JPG
Infinity Tower, designed by Skidmore Owings and Merrill (SOM), will stand 80 stories high at 330 meters and will be the world’s tallest tower to feature a 90 degree twist. Infinity Tower will house luxury residential apartments, pools, a state of the art gymnasium, a nursery, conference room facilities, tennis courts and a luxury spa. The innovative design affords apartments on all sides staggering views. Open-space design has been implemented to ensure a minimum of pillars and Floor to ceiling windows providing a true sense of space and light. A reinforced concrete column will rotate with the twisting shape to create a helix. In addition each floor will accommodate a 1.2 degree twist to achieve the full unique 90 degree spiral.

SOM's out of town projects are often much more interesting than the ones they design for New York.

Are there any buildings being constructed now that aren't going to be the world's tallest?
perhaps the FT needs to be upped to 2001 feet, hmm?

People will think of all kinds of bull just to sell some apartments.
This won't even be close to being the world's tallest. This is simply the tallest building within the category of buildings that have a 90-degree twist. Looks like Dubai has another world record to add to its growing portfolio.

Is it safe to do that? I'd be kinda scared to be living up there.

All the good SOM people have always worked out of the Chicago office...

That facade has been used in atleast 3 recent New York designs and that twist reminds me of the former Freedom Tower.

A pic from the site. The plot looks really small for such a tower.

A massive render.

It seems to me that they save the worst sh-t for NYC. Some of the crap they have built here is down right offensive.

Well, if renders of glass towers in London's often glowering, leaden sky can be ethereally translucent, why can't renders of buildigns in Dubai be surrounded by lush verdure? :D

That's about what it is.
Well actually, Trump is less flamboyant.

The area in the above render is Dubai Marina. It will have plenty of greenery.
Dubai desalinizes a huge amount of water, and they are not going to leave the areas like Dubai Marina as desert. More trees and landscaped areas are being added all the time to the city area.
You party poopers will eat your words when Dubai finishes all of these projects. It seems to me there is a lot of jealousy and looking down the nose
at Dubai, but it's making development in NY look like playing with tinker toys.

^ Yeah, but I wish it were more walkable; those are the resorts you can really enjoy. Mykonos, South Beach, Seaside, Brighton...

SO true! I was alone for a trip to South Beach, but I made friends there while constantly walking around. Much harder to do if you're isolated inside of a vehicle.

Actually the marina will be filled with more towers, it'll be quite dense. There'll be some but not loads of greenery, also probably some palm trees, etc.

DUBAI TO HOLD GULF ART FAIR
NY TIMES (http://travel2.nytimes.com/2006/07/28/arts/28voge.html)
Inside Art
July 30, 2006
As if there weren’t enough contemporary-art fairs these days, Candlestar, a London-based arts consulting firm, is organizing the Gulf Art Fair, to be held March 7 to 10 in Dubai. It will include some 50 of the world’s leading dealers.
Michael Benson, a director of Candlestar, said he was hoping to ride on the coattails of Christie’s, which held its first sale in Dubai in May. That sale totaled $8.4 million, with only 16 of the 127 lots unsold. Recognized dealers like PaceWildenstein from New York and the Lisson Gallery from London have agreed to participate, Mr. Benson said.

Venue
The Gulf Art Fair will take place at the spectacular Madinat Arena, a state of the art exhibition hall located within walking distance of some of the most luxurious hotels in the world. Built around a large lagoon beside the world famous Burj al Arab Hotel, the venue provides a relaxed and spacious venue for some fifty international galleries. Outside the Arena and connected by a small bridge, visitors can see a curated exhibition of large 3-dimensional work on the Fort Island, transformed for the event into a stunning sculpture garden and bar area.
Jumeirah Beach is a short drive from the airport, the Financial District and Marina City and sits equidistant between the two Palms. Parking is easily available and the numerous hotels and restaurants of Jumeirah Beach make this an ideal base for overseas visitors for the duration of the fair.
