View Full Version : 26ft U-Hual in Lower Manhattan?

hey all,
I'm in a bit of a pickle it seems. I rented a U-Haul to move from PA to the Jersey shore. On the way I planned on going to Manhattan to help a friend of mine move from here to there for a summer internship. She'll be living at 84 Williams St. (between John St and Maiden Ln). I rented a 14ft U-Haul because that was enough for both of us and it would be relatively small enough to drive without major concernt. Well, U-Haul has a (good) policy that if they don't have the truck you want, they will upgrade to the next available size for extra cost. The problem I have, obviously, is that they upgraded me several sizes to a 26ft truck.
Can anyone give an idea about what I need to know about getting her into the city?
Here's the map of my directions (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&saddr=78+Brown+St,+Lewisburg,+PA+17837&daddr=84+Williams+St,+New+York,+NY&om=1&ll=40.709353,-74.009979&spn=0.005628,0.014291) for reference.
I'm leaving Sunday, so any help before then would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Check the height of the truck -- probably won't be a problem but there are RESTRICTIONS (http://www.panynj.gov/restrictions) in effect for certain sized trucks in the Holland Tunnel.
Under NYPD's "Operation Atlas (http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/html/atlas.html#core)" there is 24-hour security in effect in the Financial District so you might find yourself subject to a search of the truck when you get in the area of your destination:
PATROL OPERATIONS/INCREASED COVERAGE
The Financial district is under intense 24-hour coverage.

I would go back to u-haul and get my original truck...You will have hard time getting around in lower manhattan, with such a big truck...streets are small and turns are sharp...
also I would take the Lincoln Tunnel in.. if they don't let you into Holland Tunnel for some reason, you will have difficult time getting back to Lincoln Tunnel....

How do you go about parking U-Hauls in the city when it comes time to unload them? Do you just have to double park in front of your place or is there a better option?

I guess it went up since I got one....
I got it shortly after they increased it over in Queens. One of those miraculous moments where you park between some people, and then those people are all gone when you come back and see your car has a ticket that was written 15 minutes ago but the ticketperson muct be the flash or something because they are nowhere in sight!

Double parking in the Financial District -- particularly near the Fed Reserve building -- might be a little dicey.
Definitely woudn't leave the truck unattended if I were you.

I don't know about the original poster but I will be unloading on W. 86th. Do you still risk getting a ticket if someone is with the U-Haul at all times?

Don't think so -- if you move the truck when the traffic cop says to.

Why don't you find out which days and hours the alternate side parking rules apply to W86th Street and go there at the right time to get a legit parking space. You won't have to worry about a summons aor a traffic cop.
Most cops are not nice enough to ask you to move, they just start writing..:(
