I'm married with 3 kids. All of the hotels in my price range in downtown only seem to allow online bookings for 4 people. If I book a room for 4 and have one of my kids sleep in a sleeping bag on the floor...will I be banished to the street ? We're looking at hotels around time square e.g. (Novatel) for 3 days ?

I'm confused: are you looking for hotels downtown or in Times Square? Either way, it's probably a good idea to phone the hotels with your question.

i've heard of other people who experience this problem, regardless of what city they are visiting - obviously most hotels don't encourage having 5 people in a room with 2 beds; some strictly prohibited 5 people in a room for liability or fire hazard reasons - however, i would just book for 4 and "sneak" the other child if a phone call (to the hotels' front desk) yields a discouraging answer...As shady as it sounds, I would just sorta hide the 3rd child during check-in - Once check-in is accomplished, no need to worry; you can even ask for a cot (hey, your back might hurt on the regular bed - wink, wink)....

I don't know but don't you think that's a little risky...I would try to find a hotel that doesn't have a problem with 5 people...If you encounter a problem , that would be a terrible way to start your vacation.. don't you think?

Nope.

Most hotels around the country charge you extra for every person you have, I seriously doubt NYC would be any different.

Yes you risk being "caught" but so long as you are not abusing what you are given (having 9 teenagers in a room for 2, etc etc, and all eat the free continental "breakfast") you shuol dnot have too much to worry about. Just do not be freaking obvious about it.

The only double check I would do is see if they ALLOW an extra person in the room (use an alternate name/etc). The worst that could happen at one of these places is that they would charge you for the cot....
