Sports to watch in New York

Hi, I'll be in NY June 29th to July 11th. We're a big sports family, and would like to go and see a game of something when we're over there. We don't really know much about the sports or the teams over in New York, but we'd really like to savour the atmosphere somewhere! Can anyone give me me a help in the right direction for the following:

New York Red Bulls (any other soccer teams based in New York?)-Dunno if the MLS season is still going on with the World Cup now started, it's different in some countries. Mo Johnston used to play for the team I support.

American football-Not the biggest American football fan, but would going to see a game at the Giants Stadium be worth it? I believe there are two American football teams that play in NY, right?

Basketball-Again, two teams? I'd really like to see a basketball game, if the season is still on. Is getting tickets hard?

New York Yankees-We'd probably most like to see a game at the Yankee stadium. Is getting tickets for baseball games easily, because of the way baseball is played-often over a few days?

If anyone can give information about whether the seasons on each of the sports are still on, how hard it would be getting tickets, how much they cost, the fixtures, etc, I'd really appreciate it. Outside of football (soccer), we're pretty much lost.

Yankees will be playing the Mets (the two NY teams) at Yankee Stadium on June 30, July 1 & 2 -- Yankees are out of town for all the other days you will be here.

THe NYC minor league Baseball team -- the Brooklyn Cyclones (they play at Keyspan Park in Coney Island) -- have some home games while you're in NYC: http://brooklyncyclones.com/tickets/schedule/

Basketball season will be over when you arrive.

How hard would it be to book tickets for The Mets games? Would it be safe to do it over the internet-do they send them out?-or just try to buy them when we're over? We live in Britain.

You can get them direct in NYC at the METS store on 42nd St. across from Bryant Park.

I don't know about ordering them on the internet and then having them sent to Britain.

You can get terrific seats for about $30 each.

David, I suggest you try and get tickets ahead of time and get them to send it to you somehow. If you wait until you get here to get them, they may be sold out and then you'll be left with no sports to watch. Just a suggestion.

You can usually select a print at home option to get the tickets e-mailed to you as Acrobat files. These work fine to get in the stadium but the only drawback is you won't have the actual tickets to keep as souvenirs.
