Well, as a man, I can state without any doubt that masturbation is a pleasant way to pass some free time.
Leaving the house takes more planning and usually some money. But, if you cannot amuse yourself in your home, walk New York and see all the projects we write about in the Skyscrapers and Architecture forum.

How, er, subtle of you BR. But you speak the truth.
For me, I never get bored because my brain is too noisy. If it isn't occupied by staring at a white wall wondering what's behind it then I'm grooving to the music that constantly plays inside my head. And if you give me a pen or pencil and a scrap of paper, I'll draw for days on end without so much as a peep outta me. It don't take me much to be content.
But otherwise, I'd say just get out and walk around, preferably somewhere you don't know inside-out. And if you like books, then book stores and libraries are great occupiers of time.

In addition to all the wonderful suggestions above, I'd add: Watching movies, playing video games, poker, going to the beach, visiting friends, bowling, driving around, talking to people online, drinking, sleeping, tennis, basketball, and downloading music.

I have a compass repeater from the USS Hornet and I'm converting it to a wind direction indicator....gonna put a selsyn transmitter in a waterproof box, install a vane and it should work just fine. It'll take two days-off, however.;)

Yeah, I knew it was a reference to something, but what it was is beyond me. So instead I go the matter-of-fact route..

I was thinking of just hopping on the subway and going to Union Square Park one night this week... it always seems to be hopping. Any other places like this?

Alot of city parks have summer concerts. Brooklyn has some great concerts too. The B-52's on August 10th. Liza Minelli on July 17th. The Spinners are at Battery Park (or WFC) tonight. Roberta Flack & Chaka Khan coming to Bed-Stuy. All free concerts. Last Saturday Scissor Sisters performed a free concert at SirenMusic Festival at Coney Island (you can see it on YouTube). NY is definitely one of the best cities for summer evening fun. Prince played a cameo performance atthe Celebrate Brooklyn series in Prospect Park.
Also, good (cheap) concerts at Southpaw in Park Slope and Northsix in Williamsburg. McCarran Pool in Williamsburg has some great shows coming including the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs,
